May 25 Review of Performances and Projects

Remember to write you full name a class period on the first line of your entry.

1.  For this week, if you did not do last week's blog, do that.  This is the prompt:

Since we are finished going to performances for this year,  it's time to sit back and reflect about what we remember from each performance.  This is the first of several blogs that will ask you to review the entire year.  These are the performances we attended:
A Servant of Two Masters
The Daughter of the Regiment
Much Ado About Nothing
The Tristan Effect
Rigoletto
The Sleeping Beauty
The Consul (optional)
The Importance of Being Earnest
Carmina Burana
Tales of Hoffmann

  • Rank the shows from 1 to 10:  The most successful production/performance would be 1; the least successful production/performance would be 10.  If you didn't go to The Consul then that will be 10.
  • Then write at least three or four sentences for each performance explaining why you ranked it the way you did.
2.  If you already answered prompt #1, then answer this prompt:

Review the non-performance aspects of the class.  Write at least 15 sentences, explaining what the best parts of the class (assignments, Rob's visits, blogs, etc) were.  Then write what the least effective aspects of the class were.  Be nice.

This class had many good aspects, not even including the performances. My favorite assignment is the blogs we do every week. I like it because it’s a fun way to express what I think every week. It’s better than writing it out on paper in perfect grammar, if this was a normal English class. I also liked when Rob visited. Most of the information was a review of what we just learned, but he did a fantastic job placing the opera in a place in history. He was very informative, and inventive, like when he had volunteers act out a scene from an opera. I thought that was fun, and made me more interested to see it performed professionally. I did think that the normal school assignments were the least effective aspect of this class. I felt that I didn’t learn as much, like with the art history timeline. It was a bit too long, and was hard to find enough information for every part of history. The presentations, like the Carmina Burana, and the reading in class were great, and I feel I did learn from them. It did help when we read the scripts aloud, instead of reading a chapter at home like my last English class. Your way is much better, as it includes everyone to pay attention to the play, and not having a quiz at the end about the hidden meanings the author didn’t intend. Overall, I’m glad I picked this class, but sad that I’ll have to back to a normal English class next year.

Humanities was such a wonderful and fun experience this year. I loved almost every aspect of our class. One of the things I liked was our blogs. They were often interesting to write to because I liked sharing opinions. It was fun to read how other people reacted to all the performances we went too. I also liked when we acted out some of the plays that we later saw. It was cool that we got to use our creative side, and have a little fun. I remember the acting out of prompts on one of the first days of school. I remember a lot of them and they were hilarious. The least effective things in this class were the art history timeline. I did not like it, it felt very long and strenuous. I didn't feel like I learned anything from it. However, I liked doing our art history power points in class. I learned a lot and found some amazing art. I also learned a lot about music in this class which I liked. It was nice that you know so much about the music and that we got to hear a lot of different samples of music in this class. The class was good overall, plus you being the teacher made it the best!

This has been my favorite class all year. I have really enjoyed learning so much about the arts. I really loved doing both of the art history projects. From listening to everyone's projects I was really able to learn about so many different and unique styles of art. I also liked Rob coming in and talking to us about the operas. I felt he gave us a fresh perspective about what they were about and after him talking to our class I understood the operas much better. I really liked doing the group projects as well. I liked the project at the beginning of the year where we made our own skit and the Carmina Burana poetry reading. I also enjoyed doing the blogs, I liked seeing what everyone had to say. Doing the blogs is more beneficial than writing a paper because you can read everyone else's point of view. One assignment I did not like was the art history timeline. I didn't like it because it was confusing and very time-consuming. Overall, I absolutely loved this class, and will miss it very much next year!

  4. I enjoy this class very much. In the beginning we wrote rules for ourselves. I think that was very important. We all respected the rules we gave ourselves more then if someone else gave them to us. Also, this blog thing was beneficial. It gave us assignments with purpose instead of a lot of busy work. One suggestion I have is to have more space between learning about the performance and seeing it. It was hard to enjoy the performance when you knew what was going to happen next. It is good to know the story. But it is better to know then story but still be surprised because you forgot little pieces of it. Waiting longer in between learning it and seeing it will cause is to forget little pieces. Another suggestion is changing seating. It became boring sitting in the same seat. I enjoyed getting to choose were we sit but maybe we can do that more often. Changing where we sit can enhance the learning process. It can do that by giving us a new perspective on the classroom and in turn, the information.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters - I think this was the first one we went to and I really enjoyed it! It was so funny because the actors added in their own twist to it and it wasn't just serious the whole time.
    2. The Daughter of the Regiment - I liked how all the scenes were set up. The first part of it was kinda boring but got better in the second act.
    3. Much Ado About Nothing- the sets were nice. Like how there was water on the stage.
    7. The Tristan Effect - was so boring. I did not enjoy it at all.
    6. Rigoletto - This was alright. I like there was tragedy it was what made the show.
    9. The Sleeping Beauty - I missed this because of the snow.
    10. The Consul (optional) - didn't attend
    8. The Importance of Being Earnest - didn't attend
    5. Carmina Burana - Was pretty boring and I was lost at times.
    4. Tales of Hoffmann - I actually enjoyed the Tales of Hoffmann. They were creepy and eerie and I liked the sets and the singing.

I absolutely loved this class. I thought it was quite fair of you to let us, the students, write our own rules for this class. It was a great way to start out and a way to tell us that you're willing to treat us like adults if we act like it. I always looked forward to learning something new when walking in. Although reading the scripts from the various shows we were going to see was confusing and could get a little boring, it really helped when watching the performance and I had a better understanding of the show. Having Rob come in to talk about the operas we were seeing was very informative and interesting, as well as giving a better look into the performance. Although I would occasionally forget to do my blog during the week, I thought this was a good way to review what we'd learned. This also was a simple task that never really had anything "intense". However, it was hard having to go to a performance on a Sunday and immediately come home to write about it. I wish the due date for blogs regarding Sunday performances was extended to Wednesday. Overall, there was never a dull moment in Humanities! It was kind of overwhelming being the only sophomore in the entire program, but I did gain some friends through this class. I definitely wish I had space in my schedule in my junior year to fit humanities in because I had tons of fun and learned a bunch!

Truthfully, humanities was the best english class i've ever taken in my educational experience. My favorite part was how in this class, we can bypass the idea of having to read stories and write essays about them. It's understandable that writing essays are not the most precise way to understand a story like how most other English teachers believe. Even better, humanities goes far beyond reading novels, short stories, etc. We also listened to great pieces of music, studied great artists, composers, etc., and act out many plays. Speaking of the blogs, I found those pretty useful. I personally used them to see what the focus of the week in this class was. I also used them as a memory check to see if I learned something from our topics. I haven't read all of my past blogs but it's appropriate to come to a conclusion that I was able to write the blogs with energy, enthusiasm like required to prove that I learned something. It was a good thing that these blogs were not required in boring essay formats that appear time consuming. I also enjoyed the 1984 film "Amadeus" in the class. I used it to help me learn about Mozart in a nutshell so I can go to next year's opera Don Giovanni with some knowledge. Overall, even though this class was better than any regular English class, some things can definitely be improved. For acting out the plays, I wish we could have been able to move around while acting it out. It felt so tiring when we had sit for a whole hour keeping up with multiple words at an appropriate pace and sometimes that was difficult to do. Another thing to improve is being a little bit more lenient about seats. We rarely changed seats and there were a lot of times where I felt that we should be allowed to sit with different people to make the class more fun. I did enjoy the class as a general and I hope you don't retire just yet. I also hope that many of my junior and possibly a few sophomore friends signed up for humanities next year.

    starting from worst to best:
10: The Consul. I wasnt able to go, but i liked what i had read/saw about it.
9: The Tristan Effect. I really didn't like this one, confusing because i hadnt learned much background on it and not a fan of the music. Also the hall was very cold.
8: The tales of Hoffmann: Really didnt like this one, not entirely sure why. Part was because i just wasnt in the mood for opera, part was just because it was so long. We also did so much background work on it that by the time i was seeing it i was already a bit tired of it.
7: The daughter of the regiment: I enjoyed this one, just not as much as the others. A big part of why this is so far down the list is because its not a comedy, which i really enjoy. I thought it was done well and i liked the props used, but it wasnt really my genre of entertainment.
6: Much Ado about Nothing: I thought it was alright, pretty well performed and kinda funny but not my first choice. This is my most neutral feeling of all the performances
5: Sleeping Beauty: It was efficient to watch a movie in class rather than go to an opera for a few hours, and the movie itself is pretty cool. The artwork and how it was made if great. As for the story itself, its just another disney princess movie to me. The older versions of the fairy tales were pretty creepy or weird, but kinda funny at the ridiculousness of them.
4: Rigoletto: I enjoyed this one despite its depressing nature, the opera was very well done and i understood what was going on the entire time (which i cant say for every performance). The kings song still gets stuck in my head from time to time.
3: Carmina Burana: This was an awesome symphony. Much better suited for the Hall than The Tristan Effect. Just being able to sit and listen to good music was very enjoyable, and being able to see how the singers performed the parts we performed was cool too.
2: Servant of two masters: This one was very funny and surprisingly raunchy. For my first opera experience, i was surprised to see it so informal. Good story, well done performance, and i liked the mild improv they used. Seeing this one first really changed my perspective of Operas because of its humor.
1: Much ado about nothing: I actually really enjoyed this one, even though i heard a lot of people say they didn't like it. While i didn't fully understand a couple parts from reading it, it all came together when i saw it.

When I had signed up for this class, I really enjoyed the concept of studying operas, plays, and other forms of art. Not to mention attending performances as well! And I did enjoy the class, a lot! I liked the variety of art that we studied, and having Robert come in before some of the performances really helped me grasp a better idea of how the performance was created. I was able to expand my mind to other forms of art that I wouldn't have even considered being possibly interested in if I hadn't taken this class. I particularly loved doing the art history projects, but all of the bigger projects that we did over the year was a lot of fun and was a great addition to this class! However, I wish we had been a lot more productive, there were a lot of days when we could have been learning about so many other things. I wish we had focused a little more on modern art as well, it was more difficult to relate to the stories and art styles. This goes for the performances as well and if there were more comedic performances too, I felt as though I would have been more capitvated that way. Overall though I'm really glad I got to take such a unique class!

I really enjoyed this class this year and felt like I learned so much! I am really glad I took this class. I think the best parts of the class were listening to the music for all the performances we went to. Also I liked how we would read everything about the performances, like the spotlight guides and the actual plays that the performances were based off of. Also when Rob came in before each opera helped put all the pieces we learned in class together. I liked how we did the Art History projects. This made me appreciate the different art periods there were. Also it was a simple and fast way to learn about each period. I think the movies like the one on Mozart and Oedipus Rex were also a great addition to this class. They were a nice “break” from the performances and they provided a different kind of art we could look at. At times I felt like having blogs every week was a pain but now I have come to appreciate them. They help me look back on past performances and what we have done in class and help me refresh my memory. I would have liked to go to more operas and plays this year. I think the plays were my favorite overall. Also I wished we had spent more time in class learning more.

Out of most of my classes I think humanities has the potential to be the most interesting. Not that it isn't interesting, but I also think there is more that could be done. I thought the Art History projects were very interesting and that we should have spent a little more time as a class talking about them. I thought it was helpful talking about the plays ahead of time. However, I think just reading the show out loud in class was pretty boring. It was hard to pay attention the whole time. I thought the most beneficial parts were when Rob came into our class. I thought it was the most interactive activity while learning about the shows. I found that I learned more and knew more about the show beforehand when he came in. As for the blogs, I think they were good to have in the gradebook so that the performances weren't the only thing in there. I thought some of the blogs were helpful and others weren't as beneficial. I thought writing rules for our class in the beginning of the year was a great idea. That way nobody can argue about what they can and cannot do. One thing I would have liked to do more is write essays. I'm sure other people would have hated it, but for me personally I thought it would have been very beneficial. With writing our college apps and scholarships and what not, I think that would have been a good addition. But after almost the whole year went by, I really enjoyed this class and am glad I took it!

Humanities was such a fun experience this year. It was definitely my favorite class out of all my others. Learning about the arts and getting to experience them was really great. Both art history projects were interesting, but I feel like we should have spent more time going into depth about each periods. I really liked that we would learn about a performance before going to see it. This helped a lot with understanding. Although with some, such as the Tristan Effect, I would have liked to have a little more information. Having Rob visit before each opera to explain them in great detail was very helpful to understanding everything and getting a feel for that specific performance. I actually really enjoyed the blogs. It was nice to be able to express my opinions and even read others’. It was a little hard to do them every week and to remember to do them. It was also kind of hard to have a set amount of sentences that we had to write every week. But it was a lot better than having to do boring busy work constantly. Overall, I had a really great experience in this class.

Humanities were a class I really enjoyed this year. There are so many aspects about this class that I loved. One of my favorite aspects of class was our art history presentations. From each and every presentation I learned a great deal about a style of art. Before our presentations, I was unaware of all the different art styles that existed. Taking notes on each presentation was very beneficial in helping me retain all the information about the different art styles. Another aspect that I really enjoyed was our visits from Rob. Having Rob come in and explain about the operas we were going to see definitely boosted my interest in the operas. Rob was very information and professional, but he also shared his humor with us. I found that great, and a really fun way to learn more about operas and spend our class time. My absolute favorite part of class was hearing all of Mr. Schindler’s stories. His stories were always so entertaining. It was great to learn all about his wide range of personal experiences and the life lessons that went along with them. Mr. Schindler’s stories were also a great way to have a break in what we were studying. Some aspects that I feel should be changed are for us to focus more on modern art and performances. I feel doing this, would make it easier for students to stay engaged.

Humanities was by far one of my favorite classes. One of my favorite aspects was doing the blogs. The blogs were great because you could write on what you think and read on what other people think. This was also easy points if you remembered to do this. I also liked the art history presentations. My favorite was art history part II, I learned about how different types of art and how basically anything can be considered art. I think it was a great idea to be taking notes during this presentation i think everyone payed better attention to the speaker. I liked when Rob would come in a few times before we went and saw an opera, it helped me understand what the performance was going to be like. I was more prepared when I went to the performance. Overall I had a great time in your class this year!

Humanities was a really fun class overall. I really did enjoy it! Besides the operas some other things I liked were the art history presentations. Watching the ones from this week vs. the ones from the beginning of the year, you could really see an improvement in the knowledge and interest of the topic. The presentations were more thought out and well done. Another thing I liked was when Rob came. I thought it was cool that we got to see a new person to talk and explain the operas to us as well. He was really nice and prepared us well on what to expect. Something I loved about his class is that you really treated us our age, you would joke with us and I love teachers that do that. I always get a giggle out of your jokes and when people sneeze. Something that could be changed is to maybe do a couple smaller assignments. I feel like everything we did in class was worth such a large amount of points that if you didn't do one thing it would really affect your grade.

I really loved this year in Humanities! I found that this class has so much more outside of classroom benefit compared to other English classes. My favorite non performance thing this year were the art history projects. This was a fantastic way to learn about so many different kinds of art. In my opinion, I like part 2 better than part 1. Learning about the stories before going to see them is great, so we are able to understand what is happening better - especially the operas. Sometimes, reading would be very boring as many people were so monotone in their voice, but when Mr. Schindler read, he brought everybody attention back. The blogs were extremely helpful, as they are fairly quick and easy to do, as well as being more interactive with others and their thoughts than a typical paper. One aspect of this class that I wasn't too fond of was the art history timeline. I felt as if it was just busy work, I didn't learn much from doing it. Rob's visits were nice because he was able to tie in what we learned in class about the opera to Seattle Opera's preformance.

I really loved how easy going and open this class was in the sense that it made everyone feel comfortable and able to express themselves. You are such a welcoming teacher you did a great job allowing people to share opinions and always be honest. Looking back I really have learned a lot. Before taking this class I knew close to nothing about types of music, operas, orchestras, etc. I liked how many videos and clips you showed us of the music to the point where when we actually saw the performance it was cool to recognize a lot of the music. I loved having Rob come! He was always nice and put a fun spin on learning about the background of performances. I also enjoyed doing powerpoint presentations of different art movements, while watching other people's it was a quick way to get a good understanding of each movement. It was also cool to see paintings/works of art on presentations that I recognized and connect it to what movement they were apart of. One thing I really felt wasnt effective was the timeline, I didn't learn much and to me it was just printing out pictures and putting them on the right date. Other than that I thought all assignments and activities went well together to make a great year!

This class I really enjoyed, I like how easy going you are on assignments and how laid back the over all class felt. My favorite none performance of the class was the art history especially the recent modern art project. It something i have always found interesting, and i felt was a really good review from taking art history 2 years ago. Robs visits always were very informing and gave me a better understanding for the performance we were about to see. Over all this year I have to say I really enjoyed this year definitely my favorite class this year even if it seemed like I slept through half of it!

  19. This class was always a welcomed part of my school day. I loved how we could laugh and joke around but also learn. I am surprised by how much my knowledge of operas, theater, symphonies, and plays has grown throughout this year. This is not just due to the performances but also the in class discussions we had. I feel like I know have a good foundation of knowledge now, and I am confident that I can appreciate performances much more now then I was able to at the beginning of the year. I also found the art history projects really interesting, especially the modern art periods because they are so different and have such different goals. I liked how these recent presentations covered the basic facts on the period but focused mostly on the pictures and characteristics. I am a visual learner so I feel like I retained more information from these presentations than last semester's presentations. My one piece of advise is that when we read the scripts for plays, especially those written by Shakespeare, we pause more to discuss what is taking place. It is really hard to understand old english especially when it is being read aloud because it is harder to pay attention for one, and you can't really go back and re-read a section if you don't understand. I felt that too often I found myself lost in a story without any kind of explanation of what was going on within the plot. This is, of course, only a minor complaint and as a whole I really enjoyed this class.

I think my favorite part of the class was that it was simply different from any class I have had before. I strongly dislike writing essays and reading long novels about dragons or stuff that had nothing to do with the real world. So this class was a nice change from all that. I liked how the class was built strictly around performances and not books. It was kind of hard to even call it English. I also liked how when we read the plays, we read them as a class, instead of individually at our homes. As for the Art history projects they weren’t too bad. I defiantly liked part 2 better, because it was art I could actually relate to. For projects, power points are never too bad. The class was always kind of nice because of the relaxed environment. Compared to the other English classes I have had, this one has been the best. Going to Seattle every couple weeks was fun. It had been years since I had last gone a field trip. All in all I think this was the best choice as an English class for this year. I would recommend it to a friend.

I thought that most of our in class assignments were effective, however, there were a few assignments that weren’t. In my opinion, the art history power points were very effective. The reason why I believe so, is because through all of that research we performed, I was able to better my understanding of the particular period I researched. Although the art history power points helped in a way, they were somewhat boring to hear in class probably since some individuals were quite lazy in their presentations. There might be a way to fix this, but I don’t exactly know one in the moment. Another useful part of class was learning the plays beforehand. I believe that this really helped me understand the play beforehand. If we hadn’t learned about the plays, I feel like we would be very confused about what was happening and so forth. Fortunately that wasn’t the case, however, learning about the play beforehand did sometimes spoil it for myself. Visits from Rob were useful since he helped educate us on certain things about each play. He also seemed quite passionate in his job, which made it a lot more enjoyable. One aspect of class that I didn’t really enjoy was reading boring plays. It made me feel really sleepy and less inclined to learn. I feel like if people were more enthusiastic about the readings, then it could be a little better but I’m not entirely sure. One of the best things about class was getting off topic. Although it didn’t really help us learn much, it was quite enjoyable since not many teachers like to discuss things about themselves. It made the class super enjoyable and you the teacher, a lot more approachable.

I really did learn a lot of new interesting information this year. I thought that the weekly blogs were extremely helpful. I thought that writing weekly blogs were more helpful than if we had to write essays on each performance because it was more interactive. Sometimes when learning about the different plays and operas it got a tad bit confusing, so being able to reflect on what we were learning through the blogs really helped me. I also found the art history projects interesting because we were able to explore all types of art from different time periods. Rob's visits were always really exciting. He really helped us understand the operas because some of them had concepts that were difficult to grasp. He definitely helped further our learning. The absolute best part of Humanities was having Mr. Schindler as a teacher because he is so passionate. Being a senior is stressful but we all felt at ease in Humanities class because we were able to learn while being able to cut loose and have fun. Also being able to share stories was so much fun and I'm definitely going to miss that. This has been such a great class and I'm so glad I took it!

Of all the things we have learned in this class, I think the real world lessons and stories that you have shared with us have had the biggest impact on me. From warning us of rum cokes and martinis before plane rides, to the importance of finding yourself and really learning who you are in your early years; this class has definitely provided me with a lot of real-world insight that most students wouldn't gain in any other class. I believe that when a teacher is able to be both honest and sarcastic and still get a point across, then the students will be much more interested and more likely to remember the lesson. You always seemed to do that and make it twice as interesting. Stories that you have tied into the literature that we have studied have made me remember the pieces even more. I am so glad that I took this class and I am even more excited to start living my life and make as many fun and yet character growing memories as you have! I have truly enjoyed this class and am glad that I got to end my senior year with it!

Humanities was definitely one of my favorite classes this year! I enjoyed the environment in our class, at least most of the times, when our class didn't give too much trouble. The things that I enjoyed the most in the class was the Art History Projects. For part one I loved working on the project because luckily I got Italian Renaissance which is my favorite era of our history, before the modern century (19th Century). I enjoyed the second part of the Art Project, too, and i enjoyed learning about the different styles of art but I got one of the most hair-twisting topic called, Modernism Art. I enjoyed doing it and it was a fun topic but it was really hard to find accurate information on it and make the presentation interactive but thats hard to do for every presentation. I also liked the times when we were watching videos/movies/snippets from the operas in class! My absolute favorite movie that we watched was Amadeus, an incredible story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart life, told by his peer and secret rival Antonio Salieri. I always did independent studies on Amadeus Mozart but I didn't even know that this movie existed and I was really happy to watch it. Finally, I loved the class the way it was/is. It had its serious and study times but it had a quite a lot of fun times, which was also beneficial because being in that kind of environment boosts up my curiosity and makes me pay attention. The best part of the class was of course the stories that Mr. Schindler told us. Its definitely the most memorable (other than the projects and the performances) and enjoyable. Those stories definitely thought me important life skill, which I prefer not to say here on the internet, its better this way! I truly enjoyed and loved Humanities and I cant ask for a better teacher to teach this unit than Mr. Schindler. I'm sad to leave this class but it thought me many important knowledges and I definitely collected some unforgettable memories. Thank you for the fantastic year Mr. Schindler!

    1. A Servant of Two Masters- I loved this play, wasn't expecting much when we went into it but I was pleasantly surprised! The humor was spot-on and the pop culture references really pushed the play into a new space.

    2. The Importance of Being Earnest- I really liked the atmosphere of the venue and how engaged the audience was. I also liked the actors and actresses.

    3. Sleeping Beauty- It was a beuatiful presentation of the classic tale. The costumes were exquisite and really added to the performance.

    4. Carmina Burana- The vocals were amazing and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be ale to see this performance live. It was almost overwhelming.

5.Much Ado about Nothing- Shakespheare, to me always kind of drags on. And this was no exception. I was also sat next to a very loud women with smacky gum. So that might of added to the experience.

    6. Rigoletto- It was sad, so naturally I wasn't so keen on it. But it wasn't poorly done, it had a clear story that was easy to follow. If it wasn't so sad, i would've liked it more.

    7. The Daughter of the Regiment- It was really boring and a non-engaging storyline. You knew that everything would work out and it was very long. But the butler did add some comic relief.

    8. Tales of Hoffman- It was just sooooo long. I did enjoy the stories and how they were incorporated into the opera. The costumes were nice too.

    9. The Tristan Effect- there was a large amount of people who fell asleep for this. I was bored and it was very slow. It was pretty and I liked one of the girl's dresses.

The non performances of the class were very enjoyable. The reading of scripts for the performances were nice because they gave us and in depth look at the performances we went to and learned more about it then we would if we just went to go watch it. I also liked the stories we had in class teaching us life lessons about drinking... rum and cokes and also having martinis before plane rides to get us through the trip. This class has the best of both worlds! Having intellectual parts, reading the scripts and then real life connections will be the other half with your stories. I really enjoyed this class and I have had a great time being with mr. schindler and having his presence in the class was a blast and defiantly made the class for me.

I thought there were many positive aspects of class. First of all I thought that the visits from Rob were always nice. These were entertaining and it was nice because they only happened every once in awhile, so when they did happen it was a pleasant surprise. It was nice to gain some knowledge about a performance right before we went to see it so that stayed fresh in the mind and was not forgotten. Secondly, I thought that the art power points and presentations were beneficial because first they gave an overview of every era or style and then we were able to go off on our own and learn more about a specific style we were assigned. Also, presenting on front of the class was beneficial so that we could gain confidence while talking in front of a large group. The only aspects of class that I didn’t find fun even if they were still helpful were the readings of the plays/performances. These were helpful because they showed what the performance was going to be about and told the story before we went to see it. This generally made the performance easier to follow along. Another thing that I didn’t like was reading a script out loud in a group in front of the class. This was just too open of an assignment so it was hard to do. All in all this class has been really fun and laid back. I have enjoyed it!

For me the most effective part of the class was studying the performances. I really liked reading the plays in class and found that helpful before going to them. I also liked Rob’s visits. He was really able to explain what we would see at the particular show, which was cool. I enjoyed art history and thought they were cool and fun to research. But the presentation were very long and hard to sit through, it would have been nice if we could have a class party after to celebrate. I also liked the blogs because it was interesting to see other people’s opinion on what we were doing in class. But I would have liked them to be due Monday night cause I always forgot on Sunday nights. I didn’t like the coral reading though that we did in class. I didn’t find them very useful and I feel like I would have gained a better understanding of Carmina Bruana by just reading them. Overall I really liked the class. It was different than anything else I had taken before which was good. I also liked your teaching style because it was fun but we still learned a lot. I would recommend this class to juniors for their senior year.

Although i think attending the performances was the most effective aspect of this class, if i had to come up with an effective aspect of non-performance studies i would have to say the midterm and final projects had the most effect. Some points that i think didn't work well in the class are how off track the lesson would get sometimes, and how people didn't seem to take the class very seriously. That being said, i think having to do midterm and final projects where we compose a power point and present it to the class seemed to be most effective because we were pushed to research on our own a topic that was related to humanities and what we studied in class. i also liked that before we attended each performance we would read the play or interpret the opera so that we knew what was going on. I think if we were to not read or study the performances beforehand we would have been very lost during the actual performance, which would make it hard to participate in the blogs. Personally, the blogs really helped me because they are an easy way to earn an A and maintain a good grade while still being engaged in the class and immersed in what is going on.

Humanities was a very interesting class. My favorite thing about the class were going to the performances. But, other than going to the performances, I enjoyed the Art History projects. Although, doing the Art History project was a bit tedious for everyone, I found it fun. It was fun to get to learn about the subject you got chosen to do and find different music, art and learn about the history and major artists around it. And even though I hated presenting the projects, I liked getting to listen and see pictures of everyone else's project. I liked that we got to just sit back and listen and be taught by other students what they learned. The least favorite thing about humanities was doing the blogs. I just didn't like having to do it every week, it gets so tiring. Especially after doing blogs for a year. Overall Humanities class was a fun experience.

My favorite part of humanities was listening to the music before we went to symphonies and operas. I wished that we listened to a lot more music because I thought it was more important than reading every part of the play. Another aspect of class i enjoyed was the films we watched. MY favorite project we did was the modern art power points. I think people were much more interested in current art history which made for way better presentations. I didn't enjoy reading the plays in class because we aren't actors. It would have been better if we read bits and pieces and leave the whole thing for the performance.

I actually really enjoyed humanities. Mr. Schindler, you were one of my favorite teachers that i've ever had in my entire schooling career and your class, while at times was dull, I really enjoyed the class as a whole and I really liked reading some of the books. I didn't like the poetry we did yesterday and the day before but I liked a lot of the summaries of books and stuff we went over.

I enjoyed this year taking humanities. I enjoyed most of the performances, but I also really enjoyed Robs visits. I think that his visits were influential and important in order to understand what we are learning. Every time he would come, he would describe things in good detail that would help me understand and clear up my confusion. I also liked how his visits were kind of like a history lesson. Another aspect I liked was the blogs. They helped me focus on what we did in the week, review plays and performances, and give positive feedback. What I didn't enjoy so much was the reading in class. It was sort of repetitive and boring especially when we would do it on block days. Overall I really liked this class. I really liked Mr Schindler. You were really funny and I looked forward to going to class everyday.

I am so happy i took Humanities. I learned so much that i never would of thought i would learn. Such as art styles and the history behind them. It was really helpful learning and doing projects on them because now I can look at art and tell what style it is from. The blogs were easier than i thought they were going to be. It was really cool being able to see other peoples thoughts on performances. I would have to say my least favorite part was the long readings we would do. But i do understand why we did them and that they were prepping us for the performances. Overall, Schindler's passion for art and operas and humanities in general really made the class come alive. I always looked forward to class and knew we would learn something interesting everyday!

  36. Okay so I think the reason that I liked this class so much was the fact that it was sooo different from any other English that I've taken have to say my favorite part of this year was the variety of things we did all year. Granted I did not like the projects but I loved what we learned from each of the projects . I honestly can say that I look at art differently because of those projects. I do have to say that I did not enjoy doing the blogs but I understand why you made us do them. I thought it was cool after every performance when I was getting ready to write mine I could skim other peoples and see what they thought of the shows. Over all I am so glad i took this class this year.

The parts of the class that i enjoyed most were the funny times we had talking about completely random and off topic things. I really enjoyed the general atmosphere of the classroom and how everyone was completely comfortable with saying pretty much whatever, whenever. The projects that we had to do weren't that bad either and were fairly easy and we had plenty for time to work on them in class which I enjoyed too. I also liked that i was able to find some styles of at that i didn't think were completely stupid or a waste of time and effort. Also Mr Schindler did a good job at teaching and maintaining a good atmosphere in the classroom as i mentioned earlier. However there were a few things about the class that i didn't enjoy were going to the performances on school nights. The performances on school nights made it really difficult to get all the other things we needed to get done harder to do and we also had to go to school super early the next day after a long night. Reading the plays before class also wasn't one of my most favorite things because everyone didn't really care that much and it made it a really lame and boring experience that no one enjoyed. Overall i had a great time in this class and i would take it again if I went back in time and had to re do my schedule.

The parts of the class i enjoyed most would have to be the research on art we did. Not necessarily the projects we did, but i really liked the art i learned about and got to see in the powerpoints. The requirement for lots and lots of pictures is a good requirement, looking at art is something i always enjoy. Listening to the music we would later see live was really nice too, even though it looked like i was sleeping through them. I was really just relaxing the only way i can in a chair. Overall the focus on the styles and characteristics of different periods of art rather than the boring information was what made me enjoy the projects. Some things i didnt enjoy about the class was mostly the disrespect i saw kids giving you. I know you dont want to be mean, but you need to draw a line somewhere. Even just giving a detention or something would stop kids from acting out, or at least have them stop being rude after a certain point. Its good to be relaxed on rules and punishment so you can get a closer connection to the students, but some kids will never stop taking advantage of that

I thoroughly enjoyed the class of Humanities this year. I signed up for it because I heard it was going to be very easy. Also, I heard it was unlike any other English class and that Mr. Schindler was AMAZING beyond belief. Although, it was easy, I also found it academically stimulating. Everything we learned, we learned for a purpose. Besides going to the fantastical performances, I really loved the art history projects because I never knew there were so many interesting art periods. I also loved when Rob came to visit us, he is a fascinating guy with a great wardrobe. I wish I could dress like him one day. The interactions he had with our class and Mr. Schindler were really funny. But most of all my favorite part of Humanities was my dear Mr. James Schindler. Not only was he the best teacher I have ever had, but he was also a great mentor to me. He is so full of life and passion and I will never forget him or his many legendary stories. Danka shoen.

I thought this class was very fun and I learned a lot of new things this year. I thought that some of the reading we did was a little bit too time consuming, when we could have just watched the play and got the idea of it. But over all I thought the class was very benificial. I also thought that the 2 art history projects we did in this class were really good projects to have the kids be doing. It helped learn more in depth about art history and how it has changed over the years. But what I think made this class so special for me was Mr.Schindler. Schindler or "skin-daddy" is one of the best etachers at this school simply for the fact that he treats the kids like young adults, not like children. He is able to talk to us like we are regular humanbeing, and can really make the class break out in laughter. Over all humanities was one of my favorite classes over all and i hope that more kids decide to take it in the future.
