May 18 2013 - 2014 Humanities Review

Remember to write you full name a class period on the first line of your entry.

Since we are finished going to performances for this year,  it's time to sit back and reflect about what we remember from each performance.  This is the first of several blogs that will ask you to review the entire year.  These are the performances we attended:
A Servant of Two Masters
The Daughter of the Regiment
Much Ado About Nothing
The Tristan Effect
Rigoletto
The Sleeping Beauty
The Consul (optional)
The Importance of Being Earnest
Carmina Burana
Tales of Hoffmann

  • Rank the shows from 1 to 10:  The most successful production/performance would be 1; the least successful production/performance would be 10.  If you didn't go to The Consul then that will be 10.
  • Then write at least three or four sentences for each performance explaining why you ranked it the way you did.

We saw many good performances this year, so it's hard to rank them all but here is my order:
1.) Tales of Hoffmann- Tales of Hoffmann without a doubt was my favorite performance of the entire year, and it was nice that our last one was my favorite and ended well. Tales of Hoffmann was so precise (even though it was just a dress rehearsel too). I loved the glowing bottles at the start and the automatan made a cool story. I loved how the 3 girls were all the same people in the end.

2.) A Servant of Two Masters- A Servant of Two Masters was a class favorite for sure. It's my #2 on the list, because it was such a great start to the year. It was so hilarious, laugh out loud funny even and well put together. I loved all of the costumes. The only thing I didn't like was it was a little too innappropriate at times to me, like the part where one of the characters tried to get up but kept hitting himself on a pole.

3.) The Sleeping Beauty- Sleeping Beauty was a great ballet! It was the first that I'd ever been to. The reason it topped my list was the great individual dances, like the bluebird dance and how good it was. And second, the set. Sleeping Beauty's bed set up was magical looking and so closed off.

4.) The Importance of Being Earnest- The Importance of Being Earnest was one of my favorite plays I've ever seen. I loved that it was a two-sided comedy. It was a good plot, being that the two girls thought they were seeing the same guy. The set was great and mostly I just loved how hilarious it was! There were a lot of jokes and I loved the part where the girl was eating at her friends house and kept giving her the wrong thing then what she had asked for, because she was mad at her for taking her guy.

5.) Much Ado about Nothing- Much Ado about Nothing was a fantastic play!

6.) Rigoletto- Rigoletto was a good opera! I loved the whole plot of how Gilda died and then was found by Rigoletto. Rigoletto learned some important life lessons about time and how precious it is. The costumes were great too.

7.) Daughter of the Regiment- This opera was a good production. I liked the military story and all the characters sang great! I ranked it a little low, because it felt long.

8.) Carmina Burana- I don't like symphony type music very much, so I didn't enjoy this symphony as much. But, I did appreciate it for what it was. The musicians were very talented and you could tell that they had been practicing their instruments for years. I also really liked the opening act before Carmina Burana, the little bundle of sticks the guy hit on the top of a drum made a cool vibrating sound!

9.) The Tristan Effect- I didn't like The Tristan Effect nearly as much as all our other performances. I didn't like how it was about the Tristan and Isolde symphony and not the actual symphony. It was kind of odd in it's layout and I didn't understand what was going on for much of it.

10.) The Consul- I didn't attend this performance, so that's why I ranked it last.

    1. Carmina Burana - This was, by far my favorite performance of the year. I thought that the music was wonderful, it was loud and crisp. The music was way better than listening to it on speaker or head phones, symphonies just produce a more powerful sound. I found it amazing how many people they were able to coordinate with the choir and orchestra.

    2. Rigoletto - I actually really liked this opera. It thought that the story we read was very interesting and it really carried the performance. I enjoyed La donna è mobile in class and if I remember correctly, it was played three times throughout the opera.

    3. The Importance of Being Earnest - Honestly, when we went to a servant of two masters I didn't think I would like a play more than that. But to my surprise, when I look back I think I enjoyed the comedy in importance of being earnest more. The social commentary was funnier to me than the quick and easy puns made in the servant of two masters. I think the stage had a lot to do with this choice as well. I think the Seattle Shakespheare company has a better stage and seating area, its a lot easier to see the performance.

    4. A Servant of Two Masters - Pretty funny, I thought it was really hard to follow the story when we read it in class. The performance however cleared up a lot of the questions that I had. I think i would of enjoyed this more if the seats were closer.

    5. Much Ado About Nothing - I enjoyed this play a lot. I think the time they set it in was cool. The music and clothing fit the time period perfectly. Again, the Seattle Shakespeare companies stage and seating area was amazing.

    6. Tales of Hoffmann - I didnt like this opera nearly as much as Rigoletto but it was good. I felt the three different stories were too different. I know they all focused around the theme of the women and love, but I think I would have enjoyed it better if they only took one of the stories and made an opera.

    7. Daughter of the Regiment - It was okay, but from what I remember the first half was long and slow. The singing was alright but the girl using Coloratura didn't sound as good as to the people we listened to in class. Not my favorite story, but perhaps appealing to others.

    8. The Tristan Effect - I didn't like this performance although I cant really comment to much because I slept through the first hour of it.

9/10. Sleeping Beauty - Didn't go no comment.

9/10. The Consul - Didn't go no comment.

1 The Best of Being Earnest – This was my favorite performance. It was funny, understandable, and had an interesting plot. It had my favorite parts of all the performances, like where they argue about many unimportant issues. The sets were also fantastic with lots of foliage, and wonderful reuse of set assets.

2 Carmina Burana – If we didn’t go to Earnest, this would’ve been my favorite performance. It was very powerful, with the sound of the orchestra and the choir mixing in beautiful harmony. I also liked the opening pieces before Carmina, as they set you up for the better performance later on.

3 Much Ado About Nothing – I don’t usually like Shakespeare, but I felt this performance was fantastic. The actors were really good, and I could understand what they were saying most of the time. I also really liked the sets, like the sense of depth, like the sailboat being far away, and the pool that leads to the ocean. I also like how the actors decorated the set to change the location, like adding colorful paper balls for the masquerade ball, and the white wreaths for the wedding.

4 Tales of Hoffmann – This was an interesting opera. Focusing more on emotion and the mind of Hoffmann, it was very different from the other operas we attended. It also had wonderful special effects, like all the magic the villains do, and the wonderful lake in the third act. I was also impressed by the singers, as they play so many parts, and were singing for a very long time.

5 Rigoletto – This was an average opera. It never tried to be more interesting than a daytime soap opera. The only reason I can still remember it is the one song the villain sings at the end, La Dona e mobile. There may not be that much drama for me because we read the ending in class. There were weird parts in it though, like when Rigoletto helps kidnap his own daughter, and why he didn’t fight back, or even why the crowd wanted to kidnap her in the first place.

6 The Daughter of the Regiment – As our first opera, I expected a much different experience. I thought it would be an orchestra in the back, and a line of singers standing and didn’t move for the whole performance. I was glad when it was more like a big play, or a musical. I felt the first act dragged on a little too long, but the wonderful sets later definitely made up for it. I’ve talked about it before, but I loved the sunlight effect at the manor. I didn’t know lights could get that bright. I also liked how it slowly changed colors, based on the emotion in the room.

7 A Servant of Two Masters – This was a great intro to a year of other wonderful performances. I put this one low on the list because after you hear a running joke more than twice, it starts to get less funny. I did like how listening to the play was much more easy to understand, than reading it in class.

8 The Sleeping Beauty – For what it is, Sleeping Beauty is a wonderful, whimsical ballet. I found it to be a bit too long, and even boring at times. I felt there should’ve been more of a conflict with the witch’s henchmen. I also though they should be guarding Aurora’s tower a little more closely, to add more conflict and make the prince more heroic.

9 The Tristan Effect – This wasn’t really a performance, but more of a history lesson. It told the back story, while mildly interesting, of the composer, it didn’t feel like I could enjoy the music without it being interrupted. The story of Tristan wasn’t happy, and I left the auditorium not wanting to watch the whole performance. I didn’t want to listen to the few snippets that weren’t in the lesson.

    10 The Consul – didn’t’ attend.

    1. The Servant of Two Masters. The performance was unbelievably funny especially with the references to current events and stuff. Humor in the play always appeared unexpectedly. After reading the play in class prior to attending it, I never knew that actors would pull off humor like this for the audience to make the play more fun to watch.

    2. Rigoletto. Watching a Verdi opera at McCaw Hall was a huge experience. I like how Verdi can create a tragic opera but bring powerful and romantic music into it. I could never stop listening to the duke's aria "La donna e mobile" in act 3.

    3. Much Ado about Nothing. Shakespeare's plays were never expected to be funny or humorous. I enjoyed the humor in there. I think the actors wanted to make the play more interesting and not give the audience the feeling where they can't understand what's happening.

    4. The Importance of Being Earnest. I could never stop laughing at Jack Worthing's antics when he's desperate to cover up his identity. It was unbelievably funny when he appeared to chicken out on Gwendolen. In the play, I liked the plot and the message it gives.

    5. Tales of Hoffmann. When I first read the stories, I felt that they were too long and too many things happening in there. In the Opera, I think Offenbach did a great job breaking it down into simpler chunks. I found it unusual how love can break apart because one of the lovers is not a human being.

    6. Carmina Burana. The music and chorus was very energetic and powerful. I like how the mix between the 2 reflect power and harmonic themes. Even though I didn't find the story as fascinating, I felt that the music makes a big difference.

    7. The Sleeping Beauty. I liked the dancing and the costumes in the ballet. However, I felt that Carabosse should have had more appearances to make the ballet more energetic. Carabosse's thunder really set off so much intensity in the ballet. However, the story didn't feel too different at all.

    8. The Daughter of the Regiment. The soprano along with the costumes and sets were very romantic. However, the outcomes were predictable to the point where it could get boring at times. I think the story was a bit too simple and the opera was made a bit too long.

    9. The Tristan Effect. I wish I heard more music rather than talking in there. I don't think it's common for an opera to just have their music performed as a symphony. However, the opera is a very long one(about 4-5 hours long) and I just had to deal with the fact that they were trying to break it down for us. I at least learned what Tristan Und Isolde was about.

    10. The Consul- No attendance.

    1) The Servant Of Two Masters- This was by far my favorite play we went to. It was really funny and easy to understand. I loved how they tied in current events in this play.
    2) Carmina Burana- This was a very powerful performance. I loved how they had kids in the choir. The performance went by pretty fast and it was loud and easy to follow along.
    3) The Daughter Of The Regiment- I think this performance was the first opera i had ever been to. I went in thinking they would be just standing playing there instruments, but then it ended up be kind of like a play. I think its more intertaning when its like a play.
    4) Rigoletto- I liked how this followed along really well to what we read in class. I loved the costumes in this and the song "La donna e mobile".
    5) Much Ado about nothing- I thought this play was really cool and I loved the scenery. This comedy ends with multiple marriages and no deaths.
    6) The importance Of Being Ernest- This play was really easy to follow and the plot was funny.
    7) Tales Of Hoffman- This was a hard performance for me to follow along with. This opera was also really long.
    8) The Tristan Effect- I don't remember much about this performance.
    9) The consul- no attendance
    10) Sleeping Beauty- no attendance

    1. The Servant of Two Masters- I thought this play was really funny and I loved all of the characters. I also really enjoyed the theater in which we attended. I remember all of us enjoying this first performance.
    2. Much Ado About Nothing- I was really surprised that I liked this performance. I did not expect it to be so funny because it was Shakespeare. I also enjoyed the music and characters. I loved that theater as well because of the intimate setting.
    3. The Importance of Being Ernest- I also found this play to be funny. Watching the play after reading it in class made it much easier to understand. I also appreciated the character twist in the story line.
    4. Rigoletto- This performance had the best music in my opinion. I also remember that the stage effects were very different and interesting.
    5. The Daughter of the Regiment- The story line to this performance was very simplistic and easy to follow along with. I enjoyed the costumes and the different props. I thought this had fun dancing too but it did have some slower parts for me that seemed to drag out.
    6. The Tales of Hoffman- This opera seemed to never end. It did have pretty music. I loved the voice of the women whom wore the yellow fringe dress.
    7. Carmina Burana- The music played during this performance was absolutely gorgeous. I loved watching all of the different instruments playing in unison. The man that came out to sing seemed drunk, which was pretty funny. It added a lighter mood.
    8. The Tristan Effect- I wished we could've listened to more music instead of learning about the note he had invented. However what we did learn was quite interesting.
    9. Sleeping Beauty- I did not attend this performance because of the snow but I was really excited to see it and I was bummed that I was not able to go.
    10. The Consul- I did not attend and I'm not sure what it's about.

1.Tales of Hoffman: I absolutely adored this opera. It was very light and silly during some scenes, but when the mood shifted, you could definitely tell and it flowed nicely. Although some of it was too long, I overall enjoyed the story line as well as the performers who were able to pull that off!
    2. The Sleeping Beauty: This ballet was beautiful. The performers were very smooth and you could definitely tell how hard they were working. I had actually never seen the movie "The Sleeping Beauty" before, so it was interesting seeing not only the Disney version, but also several different variations based on culture and a ballet adaptation.
    3. Much Ado About Nothing: Although this story was hard to follow when reading it, I enjoyed seeing it actually being performed. I really enjoyed going to that small Shakespearean Theater, because the sets are simple, but go very well with the story.
    4. A Servant of Two Masters: I really enjoyed this play because it was so incredibly funny! It was a good show to start with because it was very low-key. I do wish their humor wasn't as crude because that really surprised me and some of the things said were definitely pushing limits.
    5. Carmina Burana: I was glad that we were getting to go to the symphony twice this year, and I definitely enjoyed Carmina Burana. It was very enjoyable and I really liked the fact that we read the poems beforehand so we were able to recognize them in the show a little easier.
    6. Rigoletto: This opera had a very hard plot to follow, so I was fairly confused during some of it. However, I was more able to read the subtitles because it was our second opera and we had time to practice. The set was absolutely incredible and detailed and that's what makes me love going to the opera. The sets are so detailed and watch all of the details.
    7. The Daughter of the Regiment: Again, this was hard to follow when we read this in class. It made more sense in the actual opera. My only real problem was that it was my first actual opera, so it was hard to follow the words some of the time and I got lost as to what was happening in the opera.
    8. The Importance of Being Earnest: I'm not particularly sure I didn't enjoy this performance all too much. I think it was the lack of action. The show was really just a group of people talking, and I wish that it was a little more interesting!
    9. The Tristan Effect: I wish we listened to more of the music, rather than learn about the note he created. It was very interesting, regardless. I also wish the symphony was longer, because it was extremely short.
    10. The Consul: I was going to see The Consul during spring break, but I was sick with pneumonia. I definitely wish I could have seen it, though!

    1) The Servant of Two masters- Even though this was the first performance we went to it's one that I remember the most. It was really funny and I loved how the play was so modernized. The humor was great and I think a lot of people from the class enjoyed it.
    2) Much Ado About Nothing- I really love this small theatre since we were sitting so close to the stage. I loved the stage set up, costumes, and the water scene in this play.
    3) The Importance of Being Earnest- Also at this small theater I loved how close we were to the stage. I remember how much the characters ate on stage.. making the whole setting feel very realistic. It was super funny and sarcastic which I enjoyed.
    4) The Tales of Hoffman- This opera really caught me by surprise and I ended up really enjoying it.I like how much it was acted out in scenes. The stage effects were great! When fire appeared, smoke, and the opening scene with the moving bottles was really cool.
    5) Rigoletto- This was one of our first operas and it was a cool experience to see how they were in person. The subtitles were nice to be able to kind of understand and follow the story. It amazed me how no microphones were used yet the singers were still so loud and powerful.
6)Carmen Burana- I didn't like this one as much because I found it kind of slow and hard to follow. The music was great but without acting I kind of get bored.
7)The Tristan Effect- Same with the Tristan Effect, I felt as if I was missing something because it was very slow to me without acting.
8)Daughter of the Regiment- I remember this being our first opera and it was interesting to see although it felt really long. It was kind of hard to follow, I feel like I never understood the storyline that well.
    9) Sleeping Beauty- I wasnt able to attend this because of the snow storm.
    10) The Consul- This was an optional one I didn't go to.

    1. The Importance of Being Earnest – This play was my favorite performance of the year. I loved being in the small theater, and the changing set for this play was fantastic. I loved all the aphorisms in this play and the acting was superb. Overall, it was very well done and my favorite.
    2. A Servant of Two Masters – This play was a great start to the year. It was so well done and hilarious. I was laughing so much during this play. I loved all the fun costumes and all of the jokes. It was a lot funnier and more fun watching this play than reading it aloud in class.
    3. Rigoletto – This was my favorite Opera that we saw this year. I loved the sets, especially the one with the Italian looking house. The costumes were also fantastic. I loved the father and daughter singing in this opera as well; it was so beautiful and touching. Overall, it was really well done and I enjoyed it very much.
    4. Much Ado About Nothing – This was a great play! I loved the set, and how it looked like there was water on the set. I also loved how they made the play more modern, especially with the use of the costumes. Overall, it was a great play and I love being in that small and intimate theater.
    5. Tales of Hoffmann – This was my second favorite opera this year. I loved the glowing bottles and the bar scene from where the audience was looking at a new perspective. The actress who played the doll also did a very good job. This opera was a little to long for me and I didn’t like the overall story and the ideas as much as I enjoyed Rigoletto.
    6. The Daughter of the Regiment – Out of the three operas we saw, this opera was my least favorite. The costumes and the set were wonderful but I didn’t like the overall storyline of this opera. Rigoletto had a much deeper meaning and a much better storyline overall.
    7. Carmina Burana – This was my favorite symphony out of the two we went to. I enjoyed the music from this symphony, it was so beautiful. I felt like I was able to follow along with the music because I learned so much about it in class.
    8. Tristan Effect – I did not like this symphony. I would have enjoyed the music so much more if there wasn’t talking going on over it. I thought the talking took away from the beauty of the music. Overall, I did not like this symphony compared to Carmina Burana.
    9. Sleeping Beauty – I was not able to see this Ballet due to weather conditions but I am sure that if I saw it, it would be much higher on this list. From what we watched in class the costume, dancing, and music looked so beautiful and wonderful. I saw this ballet when I was younger and enjoyed it very much. The ballet dancers were so beautiful and the costumes and scenery were amazing. I wish I was able to attend this performance.
    10. The Consul – I did not see this opera because it was over mid-winter break. From what we learned about in class, it looked like a fantastic opera. I also thought it was very interesting and unique that it was in English.

    1. Carmina Burana. This was my favorite because I love the music so much. I enjoyed how I didn’t have to watch actors. The music sounded amazing and the performance was flawless.
    2. The Tristan Effect. I enjoyed how there wasn’t any acting in this also. It was short which was a bonus so I wasn’t bored to tears. It was a great performance to relax to.
    3. Rigoletto. I enjoyed this one because I sort of understood what was going on. I like the way the music sounded.
    4. The Sleeping Beauty. I thought this was a great production but I got bored so I slept through some of it. I was familiar with the storyline so I felt no need to stay awake to see what would happen since I already knew.
    5. The Daughter of the Regiment. I didn’t really like this one. It wasn’t in English and I was really bored. I had no idea what was going on. Nothing really happened and there was no climax to this performance.
    6. A Servant of Two Masters. This wasn’t funny and it was supposed to be. I was disappointed. The best part was listening to the audience laugh.
    7. Much Ado About Nothing. This was a waste of time because this was about nothing. I drove to Seattle and bought a ticket to watch actors talk about nothing and overreact to nothing. There’s already too much drama I don’t need to watch any more of it.
    8. The Importance of Being Earnest. British humor isn’t funny. I was uncomfortable because I was surrounded by old people.
    9. Tales of Hoffman. I regret going to this because it creeped me out so much.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters. This was my favorite performance because I really liked the comedy, it kept me captivated. I loved the costumes as well, and the stage props were well laid-out. The singing was amazing too and I loved the duet that played the instruments off to the side of the stage.

    2. The Importance of Being Earnest. I loved the chaotic storyline of this performance and the intimate setting of the stage. I also liked that this was more comedic when performed live rather than just reading the story. The stage props were stunning and I felt more of a part of the performance rather than just being a spectator.

    3. Much Ado About Nothing. This was held at the same theater as Much Ado About Nothing, but they used the entire stage rather than just a small section so I really liked how creative they were with their props. I thought the scenes when they involved the pond water was really well done and the costumes were beautiful. The actors/actresses also had incredible voices too.

    4. The Tristan Effect. Being that this was the first symphony performance that I have attended, I was really excited about going to this just because it was something different for this class and myself. I didn't really like the times when the people just read off of pamphlets, but the orchestra was so talented and seemed to have a lot of passion towards the music they were playing.

    5. Rigoletto. I really understood what was going on during this performance, so it was easy to follow along. I loved the stage props and sets, they were so detailed! The singing was done incredibly well too, and the costumes were my favorite part of this performance!

6.The Daughter of the Regiment. I thought the stage sets were spectactular, there was so much detail and work put into each design! I didn't remember too much of the story from when we had read it aloud in class, so I found it hard to follow along especially since the captions would show up really fast. The main actress had a beautiful voice though!

    7. Tales of Hoffman. I thought that the sets were simple which allowed more focus on the storyline. However, I think the three acts were supposed to connect together somehow but I found it hard to follow along. The costumes and special effects were spectactular though, which helped keep me captivated.

    8. The Sleeping Beauty. Unfortunately because of the snow, I couldn't attend this performance, but I was really excited to see the ballet! The Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorite princess stories.

    9. Carmina Burana. I couldn't attend this performance because I was out of town but I really loved doing the in class readings where we acted out the motions as well. It was fun watching each group perform their poems.

    10. The Consul. I didn't attend this perfomance.

    1. The Importance of Being Earnest: I loved this play. I wanted to see it again after the first time I saw it which is why it is my number one. I felt like they captured the true essence of the play by Oscar Wilde. I felt like the humor in The Importance of Being Earnest was my kind since I don’t really like slapstick, but I like subtle.
    2. Much Ado About Nothing: I found that I really enjoy the plays that the Seattle Shakespeare Company puts on. They make these older plays come to life by making them so modern that you don’t realize that you are watching a Shakespearian play.
    3. Sleeping Beauty: I ranked this third because I felt like the ballet captured what sleeping beauty was all about. It made such a crazy story into a beautiful work of art. I would go and see this performance as many times as I could.
    4. Tales of Hoffmann: This was such a crazy performance but that made it more enjoyable to watch. When we were reading the stories in class I was not excited at all for the opera but after seeing I can now say that it was probably my favorite opera. I loved how they told the story and it truly showed the madness that was in Hoffmann’s stories.
    5. Carmina Burana: This was so amazing! Each new selection was like a new story which I loved. I felt like the chorus did an amazing job and especially the Boys Choir which still amazes me on how good they were.
    6. Rigoletto: I think I enjoyed this opera more because of all the time we spent on it in class. All the class time helped me to enjoy the music and just listen and not worry about reading the screen for subtitles. Overall I think this performance was great in the music.
    7. Daughter of the Regiment: This opera was great, but I felt like it went a little longer than most of our performances. I liked all the characters, especially the dancing servants, and all the singing.
    8. Verdi’s Requiem/Tristan Effect: I went to see Verdi’s Requiem instead of the Tristan Effect. I ranked this one low because I found myself not being able to stay awake for much of it. It was a little too slow and melancholy for me.
    9. Servant of Two Masters: This play may have been a class favorite but to me I found the humor of the play to be too easy like they just wanted to make the audience laugh instead of caring about the play as a whole. I liked the play but I did not enjoy the performance.
    10. The Consul: I did not go to this performance

1.Sleeping Beauty. I loved this performance because it was different because it was the only ballet we went to. I also loved the outfits. It was also fun to watch and never boring.
2.A Servant of Two Masters. I liked this one because it was very funny and entertaining. It was a good first performance. I still remember the whole thing clearly.
3.Much Ado About Nothing. I liked this one because I thought it was funny. I also like how it was done.
4.The Importance of Being Earnest. I liked this one because I also thought it was funny. I also liked the dresses. And I wasn’t in class to read the play so it was cool to see it.
5.Rigoletto. I liked this performance because all the effects were really cool. I also liked the singing. And I thought it was very well done.
6.Tales of Hoffman. I liked the effects in this one too. I also thought it was very well done. And I liked the singing too.
7.The Tristan Effect. This one was ok. A little confusing with the talking. But the music was pretty.
8.Carmina Burana. The music was very pretty. And I liked when the guy stumbled off the stage. I didn’t like the other piece that much though.
9.The Daughter of the Regiment. This was my least favorite. I thought it was pretty boring.
10.The Consul. I didn’t go to this one.

    1) The Importance of Being Earnest – I enjoyed this play mainly because of the theatre it was in and how it was so small and up close to the performance, and also because it was a play as opposed to an opera or musical. I enjoy plays more than operas.
    2) Carmina Burana – I thought this performance was exceptional. The music was spot on and it was so loud and close up. It was nice to hear it in person and much better than any recording.
    3) A Servant of Two Masters – This performance was nice because it was the first I had ever been to. It was funny and colorful and the set and costumes were appealing. It was a very entertaining first performance.
    4) Sleeping Beauty – This was a very visually appealing performance. It was a little harder to follow because it was an opera and because it was different than the sleeping beauty story that I grew up knowing.
    5) Tales of Hoffman – This was a very, very long performance but it was also very entertaining and not hard to follow along. I wasn’t bored for this performance and I didn’t even fall asleep.
    6) The Daughter of the Regiment – A little hard to remember what this one was about just cause it was so long ago, but from what I do remember it was a good story and the set and costumes were appealing and the performance was entertaining.
    7) The Consul – I was one of the people that actually attended this performance. However, I was sick so I fell asleep for part of it. What I was awake for was very good though. The story was one of my favorites and the set and costumes were nice.
    8) Rigoletto – This performance was not my favorite. It was long and I did not fond the story to be very entertaining. The characters were not too memorable and the set and costumes were not either.
    9) The Tristan Effect – Sad that I did not get to see this one and that is why it is number nine, but from what I heard it was beautiful and short. I’m sure I would have enjoyed it.
    10) Much Ado About Nothing – This is the second performance that I didn’t get to see. The story in class was a good one though, so I’m sure I would have enjoyed this one too.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters- This performance was a great start to the year. I liked that it used more modern humor that could connect with everyone. Really funny and the costumes were great.

    2. The Sleeping Beauty- I really enjoyed this ballet. I have always been fascinated by ballet, so any performance I get to see is really cool. The costumes were gorgeous and the dancers did really well.

    3. Carmina Burana- The music from this was amazing. Everything fit so well together. The drunken man stumbling in was a nice humorous touch, making even the darker subjects not so awful.

    4. Rigoletto- I loved the storyline to this opera, it was very thought provoking. The singing was fantastic. The sets were also very cool.

    5. Tales Of Hoffman- I also really liked the storyline for this opera. It was amazing that a couple of the people that sang, did more than one part. I did not really like the costumes; they were too futuristic for the time period I would see this type of story in.

    6. The Importance of Being Earnest- This play was really funny. The acting and sets were great. The story made much more sense watching it than reading it in class.

    7. Much Ado About Nothing- The sets were nice and very simple, which worked well with this play. The story was a little hard to keep up with because there were a lot of different elements. It was kind of weird that they were singing a couple of times.

    8. The Daughter of the Regiment- I didn’t really like this opera. The storyline wasn’t that great. I also thought that the way it was modernized was very unnecessary.

    9. The Tristan Effect- I would have much rather preferred to have gone to the Tristan and Isolde opera. This performance was made more for people who know the opera and know music, both of which I know not It was also very confusing, I had no idea what I was expecting.

    10. The Consul- Didn’t get the chance to go to this opera.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters: I chose the servant of two masters for number one because it was probably the only performance that kept my attention the entire time. It was extremely funny and I would totally see it again. The use of pop culture just really got to me.
    5. The Daughter of the Regiment: I chose The Daughter of the Regiment as number 5 because it was actually pretty entertaining. I really liked how they changed the set to a later year to make it more relatable.
    10. Much Ado About Nothing: I hated everything about this play. The acting was not good, and the clothing and set weren't well done. I also just didn't like the dialogue all together.
    6. The Tristan Effect: The Tristan effect was definitely cool. I really liked the mixture of choir, orchestra, and play. They seemed to mix quite well. Although it was slightly boring after the intermission.
    7. Rigoletto: Rigoletto was okay, but certainly not the best. The opera itself was almost exactly the story we read in class and I could follow the story line. The deepness of the assassins voice was my favorite part.
    3. The Sleeping Beauty: I was not able to see The Sleeping Beauty and I cannot remember what I saw to make it up. But I think it was good? I don't really have any bad or good memories about it so ill just put it at 3.
    The Consul (optional)
    4. The Importance of Being Earnest: The Importance of Being Earnest was a good play. I actually really liked reading it in class, and that transferred over to watching it. I thought Algy was kind of an idiot though.
    2. Carmina Burana: Carmina Burana was epic. I loved listening to the music, both calming and intense. Whenever I heard O Fortuna I get into a really pumped up mood.
9.Tales of Hoffmann- The Tales of Hoffmann was just as boring as when we read it. The only impressive thing, in my opinion, was Olympia's solo. Her motions were very robotic and so was her voice.

    1. The Importance of being Earnest: I really liked this show a lot. Not only did it have comedy in it, but also some drama, which for me is a perfect mix. This theater is one of my favorite theaters, which adds to the experience. The sets were beautiful and I loved how they did the different sets using the same basic backdrop.
    2. Servant of Two Masters: This show was hilarious, and a great start to the year. I loved how it was very modern and incorporated current events. I was laughing so much during this comedy.
    3. Carmina Burana: I really liked this symphony. I liked the main performance better than the opening piece. The music was preformed flawlessly. My favorite number would have to be the opening and closing piece. Although I've heard the song many times, seeing it be performed live brought a whole new meaning to it.
    4. Much Ado About Nothing: I really like the theater this show was in. I loved how they had real water on stage. I'm not a huge fan of Shakespeare, but the modernization helped me like it more.
    5. Rigoletto: This opera was done very well. The set was extremely detailed and the lightning effects were really cool. This show and the tales of Hoffman are very close in terms of rating.
    6. The Tales of Hoffman: I really liked how this opera was in French, rather than the common Italian. I also liked all the special effects. One big drawback was the length, it was super long!
    7. The Daughter of the Regiment: Of the operas, this one was my least favorite. I thought the story line wasn't the best. In my opinion, the music wasn't that great.
    8. The Tristan Effect: I did not like the Tristan Effect. Although the music was splendid, I did not like how there were people narrating the story.
    9. Sleeping Beauty: I was not able to attend this performance. From what I heard from the people that did go, this show was exceptional.
    10. The Consul: I was not able to attend this show as I was gone over winter break. I'm sure I would have really like this Opera if I went. It being in English is very interesting.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters was my favorite performance of them all for sure. I liked it because I could easily understand it and it was funny. I also liked it because they referred to a lot of things I could relate too.
    2. The Daughter of the Regiment, I think deserves second because I think it was the best opera we went to. I knew the story pretty well. It was also pretty easy to follow along.
    3. The Tales of Hoffman had the best set for sure. I didn't really know or like the stories that well. But I think the sets made up for it big time.
    4. The Importance of Being Earnest, I think was the second best play we went to. It was pretty funny. I also liked that it was in English.
    5. Much Ado About Nothing, I think is kind of tied with The Importance of Being Earnest. I thought they were both equally funny. They also were easy to follow.
    6. Rigoletto, I thought was pretty good. But I don’t really remember any of it.
    7. The Sleeping Beauty, I think was pretty good. I remember watching it in class. But I have no memory of the actual performance.
    8. Carmina Burana, had very good music. I thought this one had the best music of all the performances. The choir made it very nice to listen to. But it lacked any visuals.
    9. The Tristan Effect, wasn't that good. I didn't like this one because I didn't know anything about it. The music they played was fine. But I didn't understand what they were trying to explain.
    10. The Consul (optional), I did not attend.

    1. The Servant of Two Masters: This was my favorite because it had some pretty good comedy in it and i enjoyed the way the actors portrayed the characters in the play. I also think that this play had a pretty good production as well. Another thing i liked about this performance was the costumes.
    2. The Tales of Hoffman: I enjoyed this because it had some pretty catchy tunes and songs in it such as Kleinzach. Also the way the play was performed and the costumes that went with it looked very realistic and fancy. Although i didnt like how long it had to be.
    3. Much Ado About Nothing: I liked this play because the set was very well done in my opinion. i also like how they were able to incorporate the play into a more modern setting which made it a little more understandable but not much. The actors also did a very good job in this play.
    4. The Importance of being Earnest: I liked this play because of the characters in it and the way the actors performed it was spot on to how i imagined they would be in real life. They also did a pretty good job at making a good set and being decently funny at times.
    5. Carmina Burana: This symphony was very nice and the music to it was decent in my books. The way it was performed was alright but not amazing which is why it is ranked number 5 on my list. There also were very few other things besides the music that i enjoyed as well.
    6. The Daughter of the Regiment: I didnt like the Opera that much because it was quite boring in my opinion. It also was just a stupid stereotypical love story that could be found in almost any children's book and it was that deep or complex and was very simple.
    7. Rigoletto: This play was alright in my opinion. The actors were alright but not stellar but it was more than made up for by all of the effects they were able to add to the performance. I think it could have been much better in many ways though.
    8. The Tristan Effect: This was my least favorite of all the performances i attended. In my opinion it was really stupid and pointless because they played really lame music and has people just talk about lame things that the majority of people who heard it wouldn't really care for or find interesting at all. The performance would have been much better if they actually did something else than having people narrate the music in boring, monotonous voices.
    9. Sleeping Beauty: I did not attend this performance because i had better and mor exciting things to do over break like snowboarding than attend this. Although i heard it was alright.
    10. I did not see this show because i was with my brother from South Africa over break and I also had to work a lot. I doubt I would have enjoyed it though because there are very few things that please me or pique my interest.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters:
    - After seeing this play, I was extremely hopeful for the rest of the performances. However, nothing ever topped this one. I really enjoyed seeinf this play because it was humorous and didn't require a lot of thought. It was easy to follow because every character was a set character and was easy to predict. I enjoyed the current events and pop-culture references. Even though it was set in an older time, they didn't let it get boring and unrelatable.

    2. The Importance of Being Earnest:
    - I enjoyed this play because it was also a comedy. The title of this play is so clever and when I first read this play back in ninth grade I didn't quite understand the reference but reading it again this year really clicked with me. the actors were quirky and over-dramatic in the best way and surprisingly not cheesy.

    3. Sleepy Beauty:
    - This was the preformance I was looking forward to all year. I happen to love ballet but I love comedy more. This performance had tons of great music, costumes, and dancing, but I found that the lack of dialogue really bumped it down on my list. If I looked away and admired that ceiling structure of McCall Hall, then I found that I would be totally lost when I went back to looking at the performance. I'm really good at listening, but keeping my attention on a dialogue-less show is difficult for me.

    4. Much Ado About Nothing:
    - This show had, in my opinion, the worst acting when it came to cheesiness but I really enjoyed the show overall. The onset water impressed me (I even touched it during intermission, shhh) because I had never seen that before. The set was good for such a small theater and I thought that the reoccurring song was actually a nice touch. I had that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

    5. The Daughter Of The Regiment:
-The set for this show blew me away. I fell asleep briefly because I found the storyline so vague and not intriging at all but the set and the costumes were just wonderful. The man dressed as a women was a great singer and I loved that they included the local area into the names of the guests.

    6. Rigoletto:
    - The soundtrack of this opera was my favorite. I enjoyed the set of this but I did not like the storyline. I thought that the idea that the daughter was just used as a tool to get back at Rigoletto and that they both payed the price was cringe-worthy. I do not support the idea that women are objects that can be used and in this opera that was major theme.

    7. The Tristan Effect:
-This is last opera that on this list that I attended. Please never have a class go to a reading again. I can vouch for most of the students here that we all fell asleep. It was impossible. The reading was dull and the "multimedia" was so slow moving and didn't keep up with the content being spoken that I am surprised that I stayed awake for as long as did. I liked the explanation of the chord itself but the reading of love letters and background info on the composer was difficult to comprehend because I didn't know if the reading was from the actual opera or if it was actual informaton from outside of the opera. I was very confused because the only thing I knew about the Tristan Effect was the chord idea.

    8. The Consul:
    - I did not attend but I was interested in the story line and soundtrack that we heard in class.

    9. Carmina Burana:
    - I really was looking forward to this performance until I realized that I would be out of town during the performance. I liked the concepts of spring and the lunar cycle.

    10. Mozart:
    - This is my replacement for not seeing Carmina Burana. I thought the music was wonderful and the pianist was amazing. While listening to such beautiful music, I started to wonder: why is there a conducter? I mean everyone there has sheet music in front of them and if they just watched the conducter, wouldn't they be behind? I just do not understand. Maybe I will learn the answer someday. Besides that, I enjoyed the preformance.

    1. The Servant of Two Masters: This was my all time favorite because of how funny it was. It was so different than what it seemed like when we read it in class. Nothing topped this performance!!
    2. Rigoletto: I loved this performance mainly because of the set and also the music. For me the set to this performance just really caught my attention. It also had La Dona e mobile. I never knew the origin of the song, so it was cool learning it came from this opera.
    3. Carmina Burana: My favorite part of this performance was O Fortuna. I have heard it in so many commercials and movies now. I also liked the backstory to it all, the concept of life being a wheel with its highs and lows.
    4. The Importance of Being Earnest: Reading it in class didn't really make much sense to me, but once i saw it, i understood all the whitty remarks and the humor to it all. It surprised me at how funny it was, and the actors were awesome! They gave the performance so much life
    5. Much Ado About Nothing: The set was the most amazing part of the entire performance. They really worked with the little space they had. The water really took it to new heights and made it feel so much more real.
    6. The Tristan Effect: I really liked this because it was really different and almost interactive because we were being taught the special chords used in the music. I just hated the lack of energy from the speakers talking about the music. It made the whole thing kinda drag on
    7. Tales of Hoffman: It was a little too weird for me at parts, especially with Olympia. I just didn't get why it was funny. My favorite part was Kleinzack. And also the use of lights, that was also cool.
    8. Daughter of the Regiment: This performance didn't wow me. It actually kind of bored me. The part i did like was the set, it was almost as if i was looking at a tv screen.
    9. Sleeping Beauty: Really bummed i missed this! Was really looking forward to it
    10. The Consul: Didn't go

    1. A Servant of Two Masters
This was a great play and I really enjoyed this play honestly. It had tons of comedy and make all of us laugh as well as having relevant jokes we all can relate to.
    2. The Importance of Being Earnest
This was also another great production this was one that had comedy and also had drama and that element of back and forth with a character like a servant of two masters did.
    3. Carmina Burana
This was a great symphony. I really enjoyed this too with the amazing music being played and actually see the music being played and coming together with the choir in the background it was an amazing sight. A great first symphony for me.
    4.Riggoleto
This was a very powerful opera. This sent chills down my back listening to the people sing but it didn't bring me is as much as I thought it would.
    5. Daughter of the Regiment.
This was an ok opera didn't really like this one too much just because of the fact that it wasn't in english and it was really repetitive I thought singing about the one girl in the regiment.
    6. Much Ado About Nothing
This wasn't one of my favorites it was kinda boring listening to the actors speak in a different language and there was no subtitles so it was hard to follow what was going on.
    7. Tales of Hoffman
This was not my favorite. I fell asleep at this performance, not very pleasant very boring for me and was putting me to sleep, obviously
    8. Tristan Effect
Worst one, I hated it. The symphony was playing and then the people would like translate it? It was very confusing and was disorganized from my view.
    9. Sleeping Beauty
    10. The Consul
Both of these I didn't go to since Sleeping Beauty was the day we had snow and the Consul was on Spring Break

  23. The Importance of Being Earnest- This was my favorite preformance we went to. This one was funny and easy to follow. I also like this theater because it was small and fun. I enjoyed the funny jokes.

Much Ado About Nothing- This play I also enjoyed because it was easy to follow and was also in the same theater. This was funny and a cute story.
A Servant of Two Masters- This one was hilarious and Iliked the way they through in stuff that was currently going on. The preformers were funny and witty.

Tales Of Hoffman- This one I just made up over the weekend. It was a really cool preformance and the effects were awesome. At the beginning with the flash paper was cool.

Carmina Burana- I believe this was the one with the really intense song that plays in a lot of commercials and movies. I liked this one just becuase the music was so cool and it was a song I have heard so uch in different settings.

Rigoletto- This is where I kind of forget which is which and where they mesh. Thats why I put this towards the end.

The Daughter of the Regiment- I remember this more than Rigoletto. This one I remember had cool effects with the storms and lightning. And the whole setting as really well done.

The Tristan Effect- This one was probably the most boring to watch since it was just the orchestra playing. It was pretty and very good, just not as fun to watch.

The Sleeping Beauty- Didn't see this one.

The Consul- Didn't see this one either.

    1) A Servant of Two Masters.
I placed A Servant of Two Masters as 1st on my list because I felt like this was the best performance we attended. The actors were very spirited and very skilled. A lot of their performance was made up on the spot and the jokes they made impromptu were amazing. My favorite performance thus far.
    2) Carmina Burana.
Carmina Burana is placed 2nd on my list because the music was very epic and legendary. The singers were very skilled and so were the musicians. There wasn’t much to dislike about this performance which is why I placed it as my 2nd.
    3) Rigoletto.
The story of Rigoletto was quite grand which is why I placed it as 3rd on my list. The tragedy really makes an interesting story and the overall execution of the opera was amazing. The scenes in this opera were probably the best I have seen.
    4) The Importance of Being Earnest.
The Importance of Being Earnest was 4th on my list because the play was executed very well and there was a lot of humor. The humor seemed to be mostly for the older audiences, which is a reason why I placed it as 4th on my list. The acting was very great and the actors were able to keep in character even when mistakes were made.
    5) Tales of Hoffman.
Tales of Hoffman was 5th on my list because the opera was done very well. I also really enjoyed the strange stories, however, I liked other plays more. This opera incorporated some humor which made the play much more enjoyable.
    6) Much Ado About Nothing.
Much Ado About Nothing is 6th on my list because the play was very simple but it was executed with perfection. I really enjoyed the jazzy vocals they added at one of the parts. There wasn’t really anything special about the play, which caused me to place it as 6th on my list.
    7) The Daughter of the Regiment.
The Daughter of the Regiment was 7th on my list because the actors were pretty good, however, the idea behind the opera was quite boring. The protagonist had an amazing voice and so did many others. The way the opera was done that night was stellar but the story just did not interest me at all.
    8) The Tristan Effect.
The Tristan Effect is 8th on my list since I wasn’t really entertained by it much. I was able to grasp the idea behind the play quite easily but it didn’t seem special at all. The music was alright, but it didn’t peek my interest at all and at times it just made me sleepy.
    9) The Sleeping Beauty.
I was not able to attend the ballet, Sleeping Beauty due to the snow, therefore I placed it as second to last on my list. From everything we reviewed in class, it seemed pretty awesome. I really want to see it in the future.
    10) The Consul.
I did not attend the Consul, therefore I placed it as the least valuable experience. Honestly, the clips of the opera seemed quite boring and no entertaining in any way. The story itself was quite bland, however, it would have been interesting to actually see the opera in person.

1.) A Servant of Two Masters was my favorite. The comedy was actually pretty funny, and it wasn't made for little kids or anything. It was actual adult humor that was pretty funny. It was also I believe the first play so it was a more exciting experience.
2.) The Daughter of the Regiment was my second favorite. Though the plot was very simple and not super special, that was a plus to it. It was easy to follow. The actors were very good at their parts and made it very exciting.
3.)Much Ado About Nothing was my third favorite because it was a nice, smaller theater, and I really liked the set. It was very small and intimate, and friendly plot. The actors was also very good for their parts. It was also in English.
4.) The Tristan Effect was a lot more difficult to watch, because there was not much to actually watch. However, it was a very nice theater. I did learn to enjoy relaxing and listening to the music.
5.) Carmina Burana was ranked 5 in my book, because I was not that interested in it. The plot was strange and hard to follow for me. However, I did enjoy the music, so it was pretty neutral for me.
6.) The Consul was okay for me. There were good costumes and it was a good set, but I just didn't really find the story line very interesting. It was not quite as entertaining, though I understood it.
7.) The Importance of Being Earnest was rated 7th on my list. This is because there were some mistakes. I'm not much of an opera-goer, but the thing that makes the play so much more real for me is when it is executed perfectly.
8.) Rigoletto was one of my least favorites, because it is a tragedy. I am definitely not a fan of tragedy. The fact that it is made on a negative platform kind of ruins it for me.
9.) The Tales of Hoffman was by far my least performance. Some of the set bothered me. Just the way it was done, with the robotic servant and all. It did have some humor, but the music and everything was not very appealing to me.
10.) Sleeping Beauty I missed because of the snow.

    1) A Servant of Two Masters- This show was so funny and entertaining. It kept me interested within the whole play and I never got bored.
2)Much Ado About Nothing- This play was also very interesting to me. It had some comedy to it and the acting was very professional.
3)The Importance of Being Earnest- A phenomenal play that was exciting and well done. Again, it kept me very interested and wasn't too boring.
4)Rigoletto- A little hard to follow, but watching the opera was entertaining and was one of the only operas we saw this year that I enjoyed.I enjoyed the tragedy.
5)Carmina Burana- Extremely exciting music that kept me wanting more. The only reason this is number five for me is because i enjoy plays more.
6)The Tristan Effect- To be honest, this symphony was a little boring. It made me want to fall asleep unlike Carmina Burana.
7)The Daughter of the Regiment- Very confusing. I did not like this opera because it seemed to have a boring plot.
8)Tales of Hoffman- The reading in class made it confusing, and watching it live didn't help much either. Although, there were some cool parts to the opera like the flames and glowing lights.
    9)Sleeping Beauty- Did not attend

    1.A Servant of Two Masters
My favorite performance that we went to this year was A Servant of Two Masters. I really loved the first play because it was very well done, and it didn't need an over the top stage set-up in order to be entertaining. Aside from being an entertaining performance i really liked the story overall. .
    2.Much Ado About Nothing
My second favorite performance was Much Ado About Nothing. Again, i really liked the story overall so it was easy to enjoy the performance as well. I thought the actors did a really good job of portraying the characters, and I loved the theater that it took place in because we were closer to the stage and i felt more apart of what was going on.
    3.The Daughter of the Regiment
Although i found it hard to sit through the Daughter of the Regiment because it was so long, looking back I really did have a good experience and loved watching parts of it because it was the first opera that i had ever been too and I loved how realistic the setting and props were.
    4.The Tristan Effect
To be honest i definitely fell asleep during most of the Tristan Effect and found that symphonies are not my favorite thing, but just because i don't have a long attention span doesn't mean i didn't enjoy the music and i have a great amount of respect for people who work really hard to be in performances such as those. I was also able to relate parts of the story line back to other stories that I've read before.
    5.Rigoletto
I really did enjoy the performance of Rigoletto. However, i enjoyed some of the other performances more, and the ending of the opera made me sad which i didn't really like.
    6.The Importance of Being Earnest
I really do like the story of The Importance of Being Earnest, and i liked that it was in the same theater as Much Ado About Nothing because its a smaller theater and you're able to sit closer to the stage, but for some reason i just didn't enjoy this performance as much and felt like it was way too long.
    7.Carmina Burana
Honestly i just really did not like the Carmina Burana I thought it was too long and i was very bored the entire time, but hopefully other people had a better experience than me.
    8.Tales of Hoffmann
I was only able to stay for half of the performance of Tales of Hoffmann but in my opinion although the opera had parts that were funny and made me laugh, i also found it extremely boring and didn't really enjoy the performance at all.
    9.The Sleeping Beauty
I didn't attend Sleeping Beauty because it took place on a snow day but I was disappointed that I wasn't able to go because i've seen the show as a kid but i don't remember much so i would have liked to see it again.
    10.The Consul (optional)
I didn't attend the Consul because it was optional.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters – By far, I thought A Servant of Two Masters was my favorite show. Not only was it incredibly funny but also entertaining in all aspects of the show. My favorite part about the show was all of the current event-type references.
    2. The Importance of Being Earnest – I enjoyed this show because of the type of humor. The way the actors were able to present all of the snarky comments was extremely well timed and executed, which is the most important part in this kind of humor. I really enjoyed this show as well.
    3. Much Ado About Nothing – I thought this was one of the better shows. It was kind of silly and light hearted.
    4. The Daughter of the Regiment – This show was well done. Although the operas weren’t my favorites, I found this to be entertaining. I liked the prominent female role in this show.
    5. Tales of Hoffmann – Although this was the most recent show I don’t remember that much from this show. The only thing is that I remember liking the show more than I thought I would. I also remember being kind of confused for some of the show.
    6. Carmina Burana – I actually had to Google this one. I kind of enjoyed this show, really only because of O Fortuna. This was kind of hard to follow because it was in a different language.
    7. Rigoletto – I remember close to nothing about this show, I had to look it up as well. The only thing I remember about Rigoletto is feeling uncomfortable after watching/reading it.
    8. The Tristan Effect – Just being honest, this was the most boring show we went to. I thought it was kind of weird/interesting how they were reading a script throughout the show. However overall it was quite a boring show.

The Sleeping Beauty & The Consul (optional) – Unfortunately I was not able to make it to either of these shows!

    1. Servant of 2 masters was great because it was something that we read prior to seeing so it was easier to understand. It was definitely more of a comedy than the other performances we saw. It was very lively and had a lot going on at once.

    2. Rigoletto was pretty good also because of how good the actors were. They really did there job well and all of the singing and dancing was good. This was a close favorite to servant of 2 masters.

    3. Daughter of two regiments was good because that way all of the village moved around on stage made it seem like they were all very close to each other and that they also were all going through the same things. From what I remember it was more of a serious performance but had its moments.

    4. Carminau Buranna was also ok in my opinion. It definitely had its funny parts. Everybody at the play also seemed to like it because of how well it was all put together and performed.

    5. Much Ado About Nothing was good because it was pretty easy to follow and understand The subtitles made it also very easy to follow and the music was good.

    6. Tales of Hoffman was really, really hard to follow in class when we read it. And sadly enough the play was also hard to follow. If the play progressed slower it would have defenitly helped.

    7. The importance of being earnest was not very good to me because it seemed like people were making lines up. There were almost some awkward silences. If these weren't their then it probably would have been better.

    8. The Tristan Effect I did not at all like because they played music for way to long. Also, there wasn't much going on other that that to watch or focus on.

9.Sleeping beauty I didn't see because of the snow.
    10. The consul I also didn't see because it was optional.

    1) The Importance of Being Earnest- This was by far my favorite show. I felt engaged in this play in particular, as the plot was very funny. The set up on the stage was very real, and the cast did an all around amazing performance,
    2) The Servant of Two Masters- This being our very first show, i really enjoyed it. Out of all, i would say this one most definitely made me laugh the most. The cast was very fun, and exciting to watch.
    3) Carmina Burana- The music in this performance was very exceptional. I ended up enjoying this symphony much more than i thought i would. The orchestra, and entire performance was very well done.
    4) The Daughter of the Regiment- I am particularly not a huge fan of the opera shows, but this one stood out to me. The props were so realistic, however the performance was a little too long for me, and at times hard to sit through,
    5) Much Ado About Nothing- What i really liked about this show was how realistic it was. The water was a nice asset as well, and made it much more realistic, especially to such a small stage. Overall well performance.
    6) Rigoletto- What i did not like about this performance was the story line. The daughter on the set seemed used to me. However, the set was well done.
    7) The Consul- I personally did not enjoy this one as much as i thought i would, The set was well done, however everything else did not interest me.
    8) The Tristan Effect- I honestly fell asleep during this performance. I do have respect for the people involved, however just did not enjoy this specific one.
9)The Tales of Hoffman- I did find myself laughing throughout this performance, however would rank it as my least favorite. I just had a hard time staying awake at some parts, and the plot was not my favorite.
    10) The Sleeping Beauty- Did not attend.

I already wrote an essay for this weeks blog but I did it on my phone and I accidentally lost an hour worth of writing because I quit this application to make sure I'm spelling ballet the right way without realizing that I'm going to lose everything.
    1. Carmina Burana- This performance was my absolute favorite this year. I enjoyed listening to it and hearing this great performance live. I'm definitely going to listen to this next year!
    2. Tales of Hoffman- This performance was really good. I loved the costumes and the special effects such ad the ligh effects and the smoke effects. The second act was a bit monotone but other than that I loved this performance.
    3. The Servant of Two Masters- I really liked this opera. Every act made me smile and it was hilarious. From the government shut down to the food throwing on the stage it was just perfect.
    4. Rigoletto- This was one of the favorite opera that I seen this year. I liked the story but
at the end it was sad and quite depressing. I loved the music they played especially the La Dona e Mobile. I remember listening to that song when I was a kid.
    5. Importance of Being Earnest- I liked this play because it was really personal. I was able to see every details and be close with the actors and we also didn't have to use binoculars like in the opera house. I liked their outfits and over all it was a humorous story.
    6. Daughter of the Regiment- I liked this opera because the production did a really good job on the ligt effects. The light had a really natural light effect which looked like the sunrays shining into the set. I also liked how the auxiliary actors have acted and did small things such as quietly talking or whispering at the bar/background, when the main actors intersected with each other, it really gave it a realistic touch to the performance.
    7. The Consul- I liked this opera however I had a hard time understanding the plot. The stage was also a bit monotone which is good because am office supposed to look boring and gray. I also liked the way the production used file cabinets in the background.
    8. Much Ado About Nothing- I don't remember
this play because I seen it a long time ago but it didn't find a place in my heart. I do remember a few scenes from the play. I liked to be in the theatre and see the actors up close.
    9. The Tristan Effect- I feel bad placing this the last but I don't like placing the performances in order because I loved every single one of the performances this year. I play percussion, guitar and piano and it breakes my heart to place this last but for some reason even when I tried to be "friends" with it, it just didnt worked out. Carmina Burana wad absolutely fantastic because it was exciting and it was beautiful to listen to but with the Tristan Effect it was just monotone and repetitive. It didnt have any excitement or "climax" points.
    10. The Sleeping Beauty- Sadly I was not able to see this ballet due to snow. I'm looking forward to seeing it next year because I heard that it was really good and I always wanted to see it. Next year/this summer I'm definitely going to see Symphonies and Operas because they are fantastic to see, especially with a close friend and its a great place to just relax and enjoy the music and the acts. Without the Humanities class I would not have been get the taste of the operas and symphonies and I would of been missed out on a quite a extraordinary performances both in the past and in the upcoming future. I appreciate this class and I'm happy that we were lucky to see amazing performances! I'm sorry for the late post but I had a really good essay/blog but when I wanted to look up more informations about ballets for my very last part of my essay and I lost all of the thing's that I wrote because my phone doesn't likes when I have multiple internet applications open. I'm sorry for having a short essay yet I spent two hours writing.

  32. 1) Carmina Burana- I personally love music and symphonic pieces like that are great. I thought the way they used the boys choir was nice. however I would have don it a bit different I still enjoyed it.
2)servent of 2 masters- exceptionally funny. I may enjoy more serious operas but that was just hilarious. a good first performance.
3)tales of Hoffman- maybe it's because I just saw it last night but by far one of my favorites of all time. there were some things that confused me, like I was not able to pin down the time period. however the singing was great even if I hated the writing.
4)much ado about nothing- I thought it was a great spin on a very old play. the modern aspects were great in a play written for long ago. however I think that more changes to the script were necessary to fit the setting.
5)Tristan effect- the only reason this isn't higher is because of how broken up it was. I would have liked to hear some full pieces but they were all cut short which was annoying.
6)daughter of the regiment- I don't remember this one as well but I do remember some of the singing and it was great. the main actress was also very attractive so that doesn't hurt. I did think some of the others were kinda bad though.
7)rigoletto- the story line was very meh in my opinion. the set nothing fancy and mostly just kinda cliché. the performing was stellar though so that was nice.
8)sleeping beauty- not a fan of ballet. just kinda boring to me and honestly didn't leave much of an impression.
9)the importance of being ernest-cringe worthy. good acting but there were some just weird dialoge exchanges and I didn't enjoy it as much. also I had a lot of questions that just seemed off.
    10)the consol- did not attend

1)A Servant of Two Masters- this is number one by a mile. mostly because it kept my attention throughout the story. also all the current references in the play was hilarious
2)Much Ado About Nothing- Great acting and witty lines. again i loved this play because it kept me entertained with humor. you werent sure what was to happen next.
3)The Importance of Being Earnest- i loved the character swapping in this play. jack and earnest were hilarious and so were the 2 women. i thought their facial expressions were spot on.
4)Rigoletto- o believe this was the one about the kidnapping. great plot and story but i do remember the mid section of this play slowing down and becoming boring.
5)The Importance of Being Earnest- i loved the character swapping in this play. jack and earnest were hilarious and so were the 2 women. i thought their facial expressions were spot on.
6)Tales of Hoffmann- very strange to say the least. the robot woman cuaght me off guard. it dragged on and left me restless at points.
7)Carmina Burana- this play did not stick into my memory which is why i have it ranked lower. i just remember we learned the drink song for our presentation in class which was a lot of fun.
8)The Tristan Effect- nothing but an hour plus of repetitive boring music. there was no acting nor story. you had to read off the projector which was no fun for me.
    9)The Sleeping Beauty- snow storm
10)The Consul (optional)- did not attend
11)The Daughter of the Regiment- did not attend

    1. The Servant of Two Masters was by far my favorite performance. I loved the comedy and humor through out the entire show. Each character did their part in getting the audience to laugh and feel involved.
    2. Tales of Hoffman was a very entertaining opera. I was extremely impressed with the sets. I also enjoyed the fact that tit was a opera that incorporated humor.
    3. The Importance of Being Earnest was a very fun performance to watch. It was somewhat chaotic, but I think that was one of the main reasons I found it so entertaining.
    4. Much Ado About Nothing was enjoyable for me because of how creative the stage was. I was so impressed that such a small theater was able to incorporate water and make its set so realistic.
    5. I really enjoyed the songs in Rigoletto. The voices of each performer were so powerful and captivating. I did find the storyline someone difficult to follow, though we had already reviewed it in class.
    6. I found The Tristan Effect to be interesting at first. Quickly though, I became bored with performance because I felt seemed repetitive.
    7. The Daughter of the Regiment was the hardest for me to follow along with out of all of the performances. I found the sets amazing with their detail, but I was unable to stay engaged in the performance because I kept getting confused.
    8. Carmina Burana was one of my least favorite performances. I enjoyed reading and acting it out in class. By the time We saw the performance I felt I already knew it too well, and was unable to find interest in it.
    9. I was unable to attend Sleeping Beauty because of the snow, But this was a performance I was really looking forward to.
    10. I did not attend The Consul.

A Servant of Two Masters: 9
In my opinion, this was a great performance to start off our class. I loved it because it was hilarious and it also included many modern references into it. It was also in a smaller setting which I thought was more personal.
The Daughter of the Regiment: 6
I really loved the setting and story behind this opera, but I wasn't a huge fan of it in person. The singers had great talent, but I thought the opera was a bit boring at times. I loved the set designs though!
    Much Ado About Nothing: 7
Again, I liked the smaller stage setting because it was more personal. I also liked the fact that it was a comedy and the characters were having fun. The only thing that I didn't like was the hard dialogue .
    The Tristan Effect: 4
I liked reading this in class but thought it was extremely boring in person. I could see listening to it in the right setting, but there was nothing to watch on stage which I didn't like. I think if they changed that, I would have liked it more.
    Rigoletto: 8
I loved Rigoletto! The music and acting was perfect in my opinion! I thought it was just the right amount of love, humor, turmoil and betrayal all out together. It was fun to recognize music that was in the play!
    The Sleeping Beauty
I wasn't able to make it to Sleeping beauty but I heard it was beautiful! I loved reading it in class! I wish I would have been able to make it!
The Importance of Being Earnest: 7
I liked the small theather and the ease of hearing their lines. I could tell that the actors were having a lot of fun and that was great to see! I loved the story of love behing the play as well!
    Carmina Burana: 5
I thought this performance was beautiful as well. The music was absolutely wonderful and I would listen to it outside of school! This was probably one of my favorites!
    Tales of Hoffmann:6
This was a very different play for me. The inclusion of the robot was odd for me. I love the set displays and the singing, but I thought it was too hard to follow at times. I would go back and see it again though!

1Much Ado About Nothing- It might be due to my love of many of the Shakespeare shows I’ve seen, but I thought Much Ado was my favorite because I laughed harder during this show than any other.
2A Servant of Two Masters- It was special as our first show in humanities, but I also generally love the comedia del arte style, especially since I had some prior knowledge of the masks and the characters tied to them.
3The Importance of Being Earnest- I didn’t expect to enjoy the show as much as I did. I recognized some of the actors from our previous show at the location, Much Ado about Nothing, and I think it was a lot funnier being able to see the actors onstage rather than reading it in class.
4The Daughter of the Regiment- I thought Daughter of the regiment was an amazing first opera for me to go to. It exceeded my expectations and was one of our most entertaining performances.
5Tales of Hoffmann- While Tales of Hoffmann had my favorite technical aspects of all our plays and operas, I think it wasn’t as much fun of a story to watch. I still really loved seeing it however.
6Carmina Burana- Carmina Burana was a fun show, but I didn’t find it as entertaining as some of the others. Some songs seemed to drag on a very long time. Luckily, there were some much more pleasing song such as O Fortuna strewn throughout that helped the show as a whole.
7Rigoletto- While the performance of the show was very good, I think the story is what made me rate the show so lowly. I didn’t need a HAPPY ending, but I just wish the King/Duke got what he deserved instead of continuing in his terrible ways.
8The Tristan Effect- I wasn’t overly fond of the performance of the Tristan effect. Maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more if it was only the orchestral pieces without the commentary and storytelling, which I found fairly confusing.
9The Sleeping Beauty- This was the show I was most excited to see, but due to the snow, I wasn’t able to.
10The Consul (optional)-I didn’t have the pleasure of seeing the performance of the consul.

A Servant of Two Masters- It was a quality comedy. I enjoyed the light heartedness of it and how we had recently studied it. It was my favorite.

Much Ado About Nothing- I loved the intimacy of the theater. The general plot was enjoyable and funny. I liked the character interaction.

The Importance of Being Earnest- I had heard of this play a lot. I was happily suprised about the plot and how it all went down. It was similar to Much Ado.

The Daughter of the Regiment- This was my favorite Opera. I liked plays better but if I had to choose an opera again, I'd choose this one.

Rigoletto- To be honest, I barley remeber what this was about. It was not memerable. Deffently not my favorite opera.

Carmina Burana- This was a very boring event. I did not enjoy it at all. Symphonys are not for me.

Tales of Hoffmann- This opera was hard to follow. It had too many intermissions and not enough exciting stuff. The back drop didn't change much.

The Tristan Effect- Symphonys are not for me. I find just music boring. This was my least favorite event.

A Servant of Two Masters: 1 Some how the first performance is the most memerable to me, it was a laugh out loud comedy which I love, and the plot was very easy to follow. I also remember that they improved a lot adding in things about modern day society and government which added to the comedy.

The Daughter of the Regiment: 6 Well it wasn’t memorable to me… I remember a really good slumber through half of it, but what I do remember was the girl who dressed up like the guy and played his part so he would sound higher pitched which I found odd, but I guess there are drag queens so its not to far fetched.

Much Ado About Nothing: 5 Shakespeare nothing like a bunch of babbling in tongues to confuse the mind. But the acting was good and I stayed awake.

The Tristan Effect: 9 The most awful by far, no visuals and little understanding what was actually going on, I'm not a fan of singing in other languages cause even the subtitles seem off.
Rigoletto: 7 I just cant remember for some reason...

The Sleeping Beauty: 4 I have always enjoyed the ballet, I find it graceful and beautiful. The layering of sets was also really cool, the leaves over the sheer curtains, and the costumes were amazing.

The Consul (optional): 10 Didn't go.

The Importance of Being Earnest: 3 I loved this one, who knew dull British comedy could be funny! That’s almost contradicting!

Carmina Burana: 8 The one was bland as well seeing as I honestly do not remember seeing this…

Tales of Hoffmann: 6 I actually didn't mind this, I thought he was a bit of love sick loser. And he could have used some time to be single, hes like a girl.. in boy form I guess..

Humanites was one of my favorite classes of all my high school career. A large part of that is because of Mr. Schindler and the way he teaches. I'm grateful for his paitence with our class, if he didn't have the amount that he has- this year would have been a very different experience. I liked how we familiarized ourselves with the material before we went to the shows but I think we could've done a bit less. Maybe less time reading through it and more time doing active activites with the text. It would enhance our understanding more than reading it dryly. I also liked Rob's visits. They were all engaging and had a lot of good information. I loved the performance aspect of the class. I've never heard of another class like this, and I think it should be more widespread. It's a great way to learn more about the performance world and how to be more involved. That world teaches us so many lessons and is beautiful at the same time. I'm glad that I got to be a part of it this year.

    1. A Servant of Two Masters - This was the best performance for me by far, I laughed a lot and actually enjoyed the entire production. It followed the book quite well and I was pleasantly surprised.
    7. The Daughter of the Regiment - I'm really not a fan of any of the operas, so they could pretty much all be ranked #3 or the same, this opera wasn't very memorable and the book kind of blended in with all the others, nothing really stuck out.
    8. Much Ado About Nothing - Similar to daughter of the regiment, I don't even really remember the book or the production, nothing about it stuck out and it wasn't very memorable.
    9. The Tristan Effect - This was by far my least favorite performance we went to. I had a hard time staying awake, and found the music to be a bit unpleasant and I didn't like having to read the words on the screen.
    6. Rigoletto - This was slightly better than the others that are all kind of bunched up, but really there's still nothing very memorable about it. I enjoyed the book but didn't think the production was worth the time.
    5. The Sleeping Beauty - We didn't go to this program, but I liked the book and the movie was awesome, plus the main story is a classic and I really enjoy it.
    10. The Consul (optional) - Didn't attend this one either.
    4. The Importance of Being Earnest - Another unremarkable play, didn't really enjoy the production but the book wasn't terrible.
    2. Carmina Burana - I loved Carmina Burana, the music was catchy and I loved knowing more or less what they were singing about, and of course I loved O Fortuna, which I can never get enough of.
    3. Tales of Hoffmann - I really hated the production of the Tales of Hoffmann, I thought they did the book almost zero justice. The written stories were so creative and imaginative and I really loved them, but the production was very disappointing.

1.Servent of Two Masters- Very good plot. Very funny performance with a lot of funny memorable lines.
    2. The Importance of Being Earnest- I liked this performance the most because I thought the idea behind it was a very funny and well put together plot.
3.Carmina Burana-I enjoyed the music very much, O fortuna was very cool to see live.
    4. Tales of Hoffman- This was a good production simply because we read the story before which I enjoyed very much. And i thought the production was also very fun.
5.Sleeping Beauty- Sleeping beauty had so many beautiful dances. And come on, who doesnt like the story of sleeping beauty? ITS A CLASSIC.
6.Much Adue About Nothing-This had a very good plot, with a lot of witty lines, that if you knew the irony behind them was very funny.
    7. Rigelleto-Very good acting, didnt think that it was very exciting of a perfiormance though.
8.The Tristen Effect- Not a lot of acting. And i didnt find the music to be very intertaining.
9.The Daughter of the Regiment- Didn t set itself apart from any of the other Operas. Very forgettable.
    10. The Consul- ehhhh

  43. 1. A Servant of Two Masters: I chose to put this one as my top choice for one reason. This was a super funny production. It by far stood above the rest as my favorite play, but overall it was not the best production that we saw.
    2. Much Ado About Nothing: Now this performance wasn’t just my second favorite it was my Shakespeare play that I’ve seen yet. I would actually recommend that people see it. I say this because both the set and the actors brought a new light to a play that I think would have been really bad.
    3. Carmina Burana: Okay now this performance was amazing. The way the way the music was so intense that it actually kept my attention the entire way through. When we saw The Tristan Effect I actually feel asleep for more the 75% of it. But this show kept my attention for the entire thing. That’s why its my third.
    4. The Importance of Being Earnest: Okay so this show was really good, that’s why it’s my forth choice. But… it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. When we read the play in class I enjoyed it so that out me up to hoping that it would as good the play, but it wasn’t.
    5. Rigoletto: Okay so on to the Operas. Rigoletto, I think the reason why this is my this is my top opera was that there was a song that I recognized and I also did not fall asleep during any of the show. So that’s why I choose to put this one where I did.
    6. Tales of Hoffmann: So this opera was good. Not the best but way better then Daughter of the Regiment. To be perfectly candid I did fall asleep during the first act, but it did pick up during the second and third acts.
    7. The Daughter of the Regiment: Oh my god this was so boring I mean when Rob came in and talked about it I thought it would be fun but nope!
    8. The Sleeping Beauty: Didn’t see this due to the snow storm.
    9. The Tristan Effect: This was crap. It destroyed my name.
    10. The Consul (optional): Didn’t see it.

    1. The Servant of Two Masters- I loved this performance! It was so funny, it actually made me laugh out loud. I wish every performance was like this one!
    2. Much Ado About Nothing- I actually found this one quite comical as well. I liked this theater and the music was very nice that played throughout.
    3. The Importance of Being Ernest- I was really confused while reading this in class but it made much more sense on stage. I actually could understand all of the relationships and I figured out who was who. This and Much Ado about Nothing were almost a tie for me.
    4. Rigoletto- This performance had the best music in my opinion. I also remember that the stage effects were very different and interesting. It was almost spooky.
    5. The Daughter of the Regiment- This was my first opera. I thought it was boring but it was better than I thought it was going to be. The music was nice but the performance dragged out too long for my taste.
    6. The Tales of Hoffman- This opera was way too long. I like when a lot of people were on stage because when there wasn't I got really disinterested.
    7. Carmina Burana- The music played during this performance was really cool. It was very dramatic. The pretend drunk singer was pretty funny. It lightened the mood.
    8. The Tristan Effect- Learning about the note on the screen was really boring. I wished I could've heard more of the music. What we learned was quite interesting, I never knew any of that before.
    9. Sleeping Beauty- I did not attend this performance because of the snow.
    10. The Consul- I did not attend.

I learned so many new things by going to each and every performance and i enjoyed most of them so much! In the future i know ill go see many more plays and operas and such. I also learned alot about art history! When we took the art history quiz i did surprisingly well. Although i didn't learn alot of facts and things in the class i really enjoyed it. Mr.Schindler you are amazing and i am so sad that you are retiring :( This was a class that i will never forget and thank you for all the memories and fun times i had!
