March 2, 2014: Amadeus

Remember to write your full name a class period on the first line of your entry.

Choose two ideas to write about from the movie and then write at least 8 sentences for each idea.   The ideas you can choose from but are not limited to include facts you learned about Mozart's life, facts you learned about late 18th century life, any of the characters or operas mentioned in the movie, or some of the larger themes explored in the movie.  Since there is a wealth of information presented in the movie, do not write about anything someone else has already written about.  Be original, creative, insightful, and brilliant.

We haven't finished the film yet, but we are close. There's so much information, that there were a lot of facts already given.

#1.) First I learned that Mozart was a very childish person overall. He would laugh a lot and carry himself in an unmature manner. Everyone who knew Mozart thought that he wasn't capable of having his impeccible sense of music and natural born talent. He was a prodigy. They were surprised when Mozart was able to play the piano so flawlessly. One example was when Mozart was playing at the dance for the crowd and he farted as he played the piano at the same time. He was smirking and laughing all the while. I also learned Mozart was pretty young, he died in his thirties.

#2.) I also learned that Salieri was a very famous composer of his time. He was very famous in Europe. He was the biggest, most well known and appreciated composer of his time, until Mozart came along. Mozart took the spotlight and everyone was so captured by Mozart's talent. I learned that Salieri's work practically dissappeared. He had a lot of classical songs and they just fell under the wayside. Everyone began to forget about Salieri, and Mozart took over. Mozart became so well known, that he is one of the sole names we think of when thinking of famous composers of their time period even now, hundreds of years later.

    1. When growing up hearing about Mozart I always pictured him much older and more mature when writing music. I had no knowledge that Mozart was a child prodigy. I could never imagine so much talent at such a young age. I also didn't know that he went around Europe performing for people of wealth and royalty. I think that it is interesting that his father was the one who taught and trained him about music. Also that his sister was a violin prodigy as well. Overall I just think it is remarkable that a person at such a young age can be such a musical genius. Also how young he was in writing compositions and operas.
    2. One fact that I did not have any knowledge about is how much money that composers made. I always just assumed they were quite wealthy because they wrote such amazing works of art. I also just assumed they were wealthy because they worked for royalty and worked so very hard for them. I was surprised to see how worried Mozart's wife was about money. I know Mozart was not the best at budgeting his money but I just always assumed he was quite rich from the amount of work and talent he has done. I was shocked to hear that composers working for royalty in this time made around the same amount as servants. I feel like at the beginning of the movie Mozart was more careless about money and was able to compose what he wanted and what came to his mind. Now near the end of the movie he is less concerned about what he feels like composing about and is instead more concerned about money. Like when writing The Magic Flute and The Requiem he was more focused on money.

Mozart was in Vienna during his prime as a composer. In 1786, he wrote the opera "The Marriage of Figaro". It was originated from the French play "The Barber of Seville"(Le Barbier de Seville) by Pierre Beaumarchais. According to the movie, it seems that Mozart wrote the opera to define what love really is. Earlier in the movie, there were lots of skepticism saying that the appearance as a couple doesn't necessarily equal being in love with another. The theme set out in "The Marriage of Figaro" was love from happiness. It also showed the idea of marriages from actual love. "The Marriage of Figaro" was one of the major factors of Mozart's fame as a composer.

Don Giovanni was an opera written just shortly after "The Marriage of Figaro" gained its popularity. Don Giovanni was an opera influenced by "The Marriage of Figaro". The scene of this opera in the movie showed a less pleasant ending compared to "The Marriage of Figaro". Demons were present and it represented the evil. Don Giovanni was dragged down in hell by ghosts. That scene had a connection to the death of Mozart's father. It looked like Mozart wrote the opera to show what hell really looks like. It's possible that the message in "Don Giovanni" was to show how humanity is not strong enough to dodge the effects of one's acts. In the movie scene, Don Giovanni was not able to escape the effects from all his evil acts he must have committed through the story of the opera.

Although we haven't finished the movie yet, I have already learned a lot.

One thing that I thought was very surprising was the immaturity portrayed in Mozart. I assume the jokes and awkward laughs of Mozart are exaggerated to certain point, but there has to be a little bit of truth to it. I find it odd that such a weird and quirky person could compose such magnificent pieces of music. But, I guess there is a certain element of imagination and weirdness that accompanies that kind art. I also did not know that his father had trained him in his music. I thought that was very cool.

I also learned about another famous composer in Europe named Salieri. I had never heard of him before watching this movie which surprises me because he had amazing talent. I actually liked his character more than I liked Mozart's. I really enjoyed the scene where Mozart asks Salieri for help. I thought that was really cool how he realized what a great team they made. I also thought it was really interesting how they tied Mozart's money problems into the movie. It was frustrating to see Mozart misuse his money, but made me understand him more. I am surprised at how much I have liked this movie so far. Its nice to watch a movie in school where you actually learn a lot and are interested and amused at the same time. Thanks!

This was a fantastic movie and I learned a lot about Mozart and the 18th century.

One thing I learned was how talented Mozart was. I thought he only wrote classical music, but now I know he also wrote many operas. I was surprised that he could choose to write an opera in German or in Italian. He was so talented in both languages that it didn’t matter which language it was performed in. I didn’t know that Mozart wrote operas based on plays and books, but some at the time were very controversial. The court didn’t want it to be performed, but Mozart produced it anyway. It was interesting how I didn’t see a regular concert, with just his music being performed during the movie. I learned that Mozart was very good at music, but not that good at musical chairs.

I also learned a lot about life in the 1700’s. The town the movie takes place in reminded me a lot of America around the same time. Almost everyone that was related to royalty wore big, fluffy wigs. They must be a status symbol, as Mozart would wear a bigger wig than Salieri and even the king. Although, I saw children wearing wigs, and even Mozart wore some when he was a child. Class was very important during those times, as there really is no in-between the rich, like Mozart, and the street rats who might own a house, but not as fancy. I also wondered how Mozart could buy or rent a such a big house, if he was only being paid about as much as a servant for each of his works. In modern times, that would maybe get you a nice apartment or a one-room shack down by the river. There weren’t too many shots that really showed how the normal people lived, and I thought that could’ve been explored a little bit more. Although not everything in this movie was accurate, I feel like the world surrounding Mozart was as accurate as it could be. This was a fun movie, and I’m glad I had the chance to watch it.

Mozart was not only one of the greatest composers of the Classical period, but one of the greatest of all time. His operas, especially his later efforts, are brilliant examples of high art, as are many of his piano concertos and later symphonies.is father Leopold, a composer and musician taught him about music. He was very talented in german and italian language. Most of his operas were based off of books and plays.

The movie was shot on location in Forman's native Prague, one of a handful of European cities still in large parts unchanged since the 18th century the 18th century. The film is a visual feast of palaces, costumes, wigs, feasts, opening nights, champagne, and mountains of debt

1.The first major thing I learned for the movie was that Mozart had to work hard to make money for his family. I thought this was interesting because he was so talented but this family was still in need of lots of money. I thought that was very interesting because people really liked his work but he still wasn’t living a totally comfortable lifestyle. This showed just how little share of the money the peasants had compared to the royal families and aristocracies. I thought this was interesting because that doesn’t happen today. If you are able to become even a one hit wonder you still get lots of money from that. Mozart’s money situation also showed how much stress he had on himself. It was interesting that even though he was so talented and popular he still wasn’t living very comfortably.
2.I also thought it was interesting how Mozart was buried. The fact that he was in a mass grave was very weird to me. He seemed popular and loved enough to be able to have his own grave. Especially since other composers have pretty much their own cemetery that they are in. But this also shows the time period that Mozart was living in. But it was interesting because it showed how death is the same for everyone, even if you’re a genius like Mozart. Which is interesting because in the movie it showed that we are all competing to be better than each other when we are alive, like Mozart and his rival composer. But then when Mozart died it showed that death was his only way to really escape the competition and his rival composer who was still alive had to watch his music lose in competition with other composer’s music.

  8. One fact I had always heard about the life of Mozart is that he was in a way, the original rock star. He had incredible talent and made good money and popularity from it, but because he was irresponsible and arrogant he lost it all and died in poverty. The movie portrayed that very well, with the fancy house, dresses and parties Mozart and his wife always attended they were always looking for more money. His alcoholism was an example of modern day drug abuse we see in celebrities, and was probably a cause of his poor health and poverty issue he had.
Another thing I noticed in the movie is the outfits the aristocracy wore, and the social etiquette that they all had. It looked like one big stereotype of the fancy rich British snob, except taken back a few centuries and with a lot more white fluffy wigs. In a room filled with people, everyone looked the exact same covered in clothes twice as wide as they were and superfluous accessories. Pretty sure I saw a woman with a model ship on her head at one part. The operas in the movie were interesting too, because that was the big form of entertainment back then. That would be replaced with TV and movies today.

    1. One of the things about the film that really caught my attention was at the end when Mozart died. I was unaware that in the 18th century they had general cemeteries like that. It seemed harsh then they opened the casket and just let the body fall hard with the other bodies in the pit. It seemed disrespectful to me. I also was surprised by this because of Mozart's status and success in life. He was a legend, and to bury him in the general cemetery at the time didn't seem to honor his life at all. His burial seems drastically different to how his cemetery looks today.

    2. Another thing about the film that caught my attention was how intelligent the composers were in terms of notes and hearing the music. The movie made it look like Mozart could hear melodies in his head while just writing them. Also when he was being assisted in writing the music all he did was explain the music and say a few notes, and the other man could easily "hear" what he was saying and wrote the music notes down. It amazes me how creative and imaginative they were shown as in the film. It takes amazing talent to be able to do that and I've never seen any film or anything that showed that process of writing music. That was cool to watch and made the film more informative for me to watch. I liked it!

    1. I found the personality of Mozart really interesting. He had a dirty mind and an outrageous laugh, laughing at somewhat inappropriate times. Mozart would also drink and party all of the time, which I guess was a way to cope with the stress. I never knew that he could not handle money very well and I find it extremely sad that he suffered in poverty. It seemed like the only one who had a grip of what money meant was his wife, Constanze. She, I felt, really kept the family together even though she left toward the end. I also got the impression that for all of Mozart’s life, he was trying to prove to his father that he wasn’t a disappointment. Even after his father had died, Mozart seemed to be afraid of his father and wrote Don Giovanni.
    2. I also found it interesting how different Mozart was to Salieri, at least at the times of their lives that this movie portrays. Both had completely different motivations. Mozart seemed to be motivated mostly by his father and by his own talents. Salieri on the other hand, seemed driven by hatred and jealousy. Even though Salieri is young around the time that Mozart appeared in his life, he seems to be a bitter old man. This contrasts to the feeling of naivety and childishness that I see in Mozart. I thought it was kind of funny that Salieri was some great musician in Europe at the time but the movie made it look like his musical abilities didn’t even come close to that of Mozart. I felt as though there was just so much of a difference between the two.

My first topic will be about mid 18th century life. It was interesting to see the clothing from that time. Also seeing that the King was wanting Mozart to write plays for his own entertainment. I was amazed to see how fast he could compose a play or opera. And knowing how this was one of the big ways that people were entertained by the arts back then. There were no movies or anything of that sort so people had to physically act it out on stage. Also towards the end when Mozart is getting sick, it was scary to see Mozart die suddenly of what looked like a really bad fever and knowing that back then simply illnesses like fevers were deadly back then. But it was interesting to learn about what went on during the 18th century.
Something that also grabbed me was the irregularities of Mozart's life. Seeing how he was a young prodigy. Seeing his dad be a big influence to him, teaching him everything he knows about music. Then becoming a composer at a very early age was amazing. I was surprised to see him be so successful at a young age. And how he was really an innovator of the theatrical arts creating new ways to make theater. Overall the movie was great and I enjoyed it!

    1. After watching the movie, we were really able to better understand Mozart and his personal life. I learned about how Mozart wrote these plays and that it seemed as if it was always a battle for him to get the chance to perform in front of the correct audience. it also was a battle for him to write his plays while he was sick. Mozart seemed like he had a lot of "friends" that were helping him along the way, but they also seemed like they were just around him to have control over his performances. Mozart's talents were well versed around his father and his father always wanted Mozart to perform to the best of his abilities but his girlfriend believed that he was asking to much out of him and he quickly left them alone. Mozart's girlfriend seemed like she was always putting words in his mouth and making decisions for him while he was sick. Mozart was always just wanting to write more and more operas and really didn't care for much more. His personal life intervened a lot with his work and it made it difficult for people to accept that.

    2. Writers and composers at the time back then were very skilled. It was hard to believe that he could think out all of this beautiful music in his head. When he was writing this stuff it would all of the sudden almost magically appear in his head. He would almost panic and freak out if he couldn't get it down on paper or get interrupted before he forgot. This was almost labeled as a crutch for him because the music in his head would appear so fast that he didn't have time to write it down. He was also a bit of an unstable writer with all of his personal life and how it greatly effected his music. He had not enough time and too many people after him and to many sicknesses to be able to focus and clearly plan things out before he did them

In the film we watched about Mozart it was so good. It talked about how he was truly such an amazing composer and although he had a lot of problems he still managed to be one of the best ones out there. He was an dealt with a problem with alcohol and he let that get in the way of things a lot of times because he didn't really care about things. Also he didn't put others before himself, he was always just in the mood to party and that's the only thing he really cared about

    1. Mozart was a musical genius. There is no denying his amazing talent. He may have been a spoiled, obnoxious, brat, but he was a wonderful composer. He composed music in his head and once written on paper it was perfect with no corrections or musical errors of any kind. He composed light hearted and fun music as well as dark, emotionally moving music.

    2. I learned that Mozart's wife was really smart and daring. She seemed to compliment her husband perfectly, and make up for his flaws. She was good with handling the finances and was realistic whereas Mozart, if left to his own devices, would spend every penny he owned. She was brave for a lady of her time. Especially when she brought Mozart's music to audition of sorts when he refused to have his music looked over. This was a moment of both intelligence and bravery.

    1. The most interesting thing I found about the film was Mozart himself. He was obviously very childish and ill-mannered throughout the whole movie. However, I thought this was a great parallel to school today. Students are expected to act a certain way and follow the rules of school. Kids who don't do that are automatically considered dumb or a 'bad kid'. But a lot of the time, these are the most intelligent and creative students. The people who haven't succumbed to playing the game of school. Despite the immaturity of Mozart, he was obviously a very brilliant man.

    2. Another thing I found interesting was how much composers were paid and their lifestyle. It's usually safe to assume that these composers such as Mozart would be incredibly wealthy. Especially considering how famous their names are today. It was a little shocking to see the real lifestyle these composers. I thought most believed that these people were basically royalty. But even thought Mozart didn't have an abundance of wealth, it seemed that he partied and celebrated as if he did. I was curious about how he was able to do these things, when his wife was always yelling about needing money now. The lifestyle of Mozart was not like anything I would have guessed.

A cool aspect of the movie Amadeus was how whenever Mozart wrote a brilliant opera right before he wrote it there would be some drastic event in his life and he would incorporate it into his opera. For example right before the movie went to the scene of The Magic Flute it was Mozart’s mother in law yelling at him in a high pitched voice and he then heard the music in it and then it merged into the scene of the woman singing in The Magic Flute. Also there was when Mozart’s father died and how the sudden shock of the news and the background music turned into a dark and scary music and the opera Don Giovanni. There was also the part in the movie at the end when Saliery was helping Mozart finish Requiem when they would be talking and then hear the music in their heads as if they were in the actual opera. These things were really cool and unique to the movie in my opinion and they really added to the movie and made it interesting.
The movie also changed my original opinion of who Mozart was. Whenever I pictured Mozart in my head I thought of some weird dude with white hair conducting an opera or something. Although I knew Mozart was a young individual and that he died early on in his life I didn’t quite grasp to the right extend how young he was and the pieces of music that he was creating at such a young age. The movie made Mozart seem just like some crazy young dude that might have been addicted to crack or something and I couldn’t really believe that such music could come from a person with that type of character and personality. After seeing Amadeus I definitely picture a different person in my mind when I hear the name Mozart or listen to his music and I don’t think that it is a necessarily a bad thing. Although one thing that I did not enjoy at all was how he would do that really stupid laugh all the time. Another aspect of Mozart that I learned from the movie was that he was super hammered all the time and I’m curious to how he could have created such music while being as plastered as he was.

    1. I have played piano pieces by Mozart before and always thought he was an older man with great elegance. After watching it really made me understand who Mozart really was. I learned that he was creating music since he was very little. He went around playing for royalty because he was such a child prodigy. I also did not know that all the music he wrote was written at a young age because he died in his thirties. It also amazed me that Mozart only ever had one copy of each piece he composed. I thought it was funny how at the end of the movie when Salieri was helping Mozart finish that piece how Salieri was getting confused and telling Mozart to slow down. It really showed how music just flowed through Mozart and how he didn't have to think too hard on it.

    2. Although Mozart created amazing music, he did it in a distorted manner. I never knew that he was such an unpolished composer. He was often drunk when composing his music late at night. It also seemed like the music took over his life and the things that should have mattered to him, such as his wife and child. The movie never showed him doing much with them, it was always him doing something with his music, or drinking, or partying. Mozart seemed to be quite the party animal as well. I think Mozart had his whole life out of order. He never seemed to have his priorities straight, he never had his family on top, it was always his music.

After watching Amadeus one of the things I found most interesting was the influence that royalty had on music. I never thought too deeply into the influence of politics and a ruler could have on the musical works of a composer. The way that the Emperor could completely rule out one play, or a form of art, like the ballet. It showed how he didn't fully comprehend what he was banning when Mozart was spiting him by having the dance without music so that it could still be in, then the Emperor changed his mind about dancing in operas. I thought it was interesting how differently music was viewed because of this. The fact that composers felt like they had to be so careful of the Emperors views, so that they could keep their positions. Or how when Solieri was making music and had to be so careful to not offend the Emperor when he was teaching him songs. I enjoyed seeing the interactions between these characters in front of the Emperor, and how much harder it would've been to compose operas. The other thing i really took away from the movie was Mozarts persona and the way he acted. It was something that i feel i've heard before, but never knew that it was to the extent the movie showed. It made me think of modern musicians and how there is the "rockstar" lifestyle. You can see how Salieri and the other composers had more of a different view on music, whereas Mozart seemed to bask in the glory of crowds cheering. He still made great pieces, he was just so different, which while he may have been going to parties and might come off as not having respect for music, he ended up changing music. Mozart has left such a huge impact on music, his works being so well know by so many people. At the time he might not have been liked very much by everyone, but it makes sense that he acted so differently, and that is because that came out in his music. His different way of thinking and his gift are what made him stand out so much and be remembered for as long as he has.

Although I did not see most of the movie, I will try to explain the best I can.
    1. Even though I knew Mozart was a young prodigy, I was unaware of his maturity level. Mozart acts like a young kid most of the time. He laughs at inappropriate times, with such an annoying laugh. Mozart would also just do things without thinking. For example, he was writing an opera that was forbidden, but yet continued to write it. He did this just so he could get what he wanted and didn't think about the consequences. Mozart could have this maturity level because of his youth. He was a prodigy as a very young boy, and got what he wanted when he wanted; he just never grew up.
    2. I did not know that composers in those days earned so little pay. I would have thought it would be higher, as music was one of the main forms of entertainment at that time. Although it seems like they would be paid more, i can understand why. They can either work as a servant to the royals, servant. Or they can be independent, like Mozart, and have to convince a theater to put up their opera or to preform their music.
Again, I missed most of the movie so any of this information could be wrong based on what i missed.

    1. The Most surprising thing I learned from watching Amadeus, was that Mozart lived a short life. He died at the age of 35. This caused me to realize he found his musical success very early on in life. I also learned that throughout his life, Mozart faced many health problems like bronchitis and gum disease. Mozart’s death was most likely cause by an illness he fell to after visiting his latest opera in Prague. I was impressed by Mozart’s dedication to his operas and musical works. He continued working on and perfecting them, to the best of his ability, up until is his death.

    2. I also learned from watching Amadeus the type of personality that Mozart had. He struck me as a very hyperactive and immature adult man. It seemed as though he was constantly laughing and chuckling over the smallest things. Mozart also seemed to be somewhat stubborn. He would become very upset and offended when his music was critiqued or requested to be edited. This is understandable though, because Mozart was a child prodigy. Mozart took great pride in his musical works. Since he was so musically talented and young in age, it makes sense that he would find offense in other’s criticism.

    1) I think the biggest thing that stuck out to me during the hole movie was the level of Mozart's maturity. Granted yes he was a prodigy, but normally if you are at the level he was at you need to be mature enough to show the people you are working for so they will want to continue working with you. And through out the movie Mozart showed that he should not have been surrounded by all those people that fueled his immaturity. I believe that if he hadn't behaved the way he does then who knows how his life would have gone.

    2) I think another thing that surprised me in the movie was the way people lived during the 18th century. I mean I have seen paintings off what it was like but the movie really brought it to light in a different aspect. I mean Mozart was a royal musician, he should have been making a lot more money then he was. Think about it, musicians today are making millions of dollars of one song and tens of millions off an album and are living in huge houses while Mozart died broke.

All in all the movie really showed Mozart's life in a light that was very different from others.

In the Mozart movie, one thing that truly stood out to me was that i noticed how Mozart acted like a child. He seemed to have a short attention span like someone with ADD. he had a hysterical laugh that always made me laugh whenever i heard it. Mozart would joke around like he was a kid. he would mess with people and act like a clown, but was still very serious about his work. I think the way he behaved molded his character and represented in a way how great of a composer he was. Another interesting thing that stuck in my mind from the movie was the way of living in the 1700s. It was surprising to me the way that females and males dressed compared to today. Everyone's clothing was so elegant and detailed, more formal than in todays society. The palace and buildings were so beautifully decorated. Life was a lot more simple than it is today. One more thing that caught my attention was that Mozart lived a very short life. I knew that the life span was a lot shorter back then than it is today, but i always Though Mozart was still composing when he was old. It was interesting to see how me died from the sickness, and how they buried him.

    1. One of the things I noticed in watching “Amadeus” was Mozart’s childish personality. He seemed not to care about how his actions affect others. He was loud, drank to the point of becoming sick towards the end of the movie, and was very self-centered. Though he had a few redeeming moments where we saw a hint of uncertainty or love and compassion for others, they were always overshadowed by his immature behavior and personality, his boastfulness, and worst of all, his annoying, obnoxious laugh. He drove away so many people with his too-honest to the point of rude, no-holds-barred character; even his wife, towards the end of the movie, decided she needed a break away from her husband. I think the worst part of it was that even when people tried to reach out to him when he was in need, he shut them out and he continued to hurt the people who cared for him the most.
    2. An occurring theme I saw in “Amadeus” was religion, as well as forgiveness or lack of. From the very beginning of the movie, Antonio Salieri is seen slitting his throat while begging for forgiveness for having apparently killed Mozart years before. Then, after being put in an insane asylum, Salieri is visited by a priest who comes to take his confession and offer him forgiveness. Born and raised a strongly religious man intent on devoting his life to music in God’s honor, we see Salieri’s faith constantly shaken as a result of Mozart’s talent and success, though Salieri admits still to being a fan of his opponent’s compositions. After being bested by Mozart so many times, Salieri completely abandons hope of composing for God, as well as hope of being friends of any kind with Mozart. He is devastated that Mozart was seemingly chosen for greatness for Salieri, and he blames God for his failures. While Mozart and his wife go to Salieri for help on multiple occasions, Salieri had already made up his mind that Mozart would always his enemy and that the only thing left to do is to kill Mozart.

    1. I knew that Mozart was an amazing composer but I didn't know that he was a child prodigy. To me, this fact just shows how great he truly was. It amazes me that at such a young age he playing for royalty and already composing while others his age were having normal childhoods. Also being a child prodigy he never learned to grow up and how to be an adult. It surprised me how childish Mozart truly was. I always thought of him as an older man who was really classy and almost royalty. Instead though he was a self-centered man who really didn't know how to be an adult. The way he behaved almost made me lose respect for him just because how could such an amazing composer be such a child.
    2. Another fact that surprised me was how little composers were paid back then. Even if they composed great works of music, they weren't paid much for it. I always expected that most composers would be rich with all their works being so great. Especially in Mozart's case where he would just spend his money away made me realize how almost ungrateful Mozart was for the money he got from his music. In Salieri's case, he was probably paid more because he was a court composer. Mozart, however, was an independent composer working from paid performance to the next. This just shows that no matter how good you were you had to be working for someone in order to get more money.

#1 well I guess I will start with Mozart himself. Before we watched the movie I didn't know anything about him. I had heard of him and I suppose I have heard his music, but that was pretty much it. I always visualized him as some calm composer, but I guess not. I didn't realize that he was kind of a big crazy irresponsible kid. I also did not know that he would always laugh at weird times and his laugh was really crazy. Nor did I know that he was a child genius. According to the movie he could play just as good as someone who had been playing for years, when he was only several years old.

#2 Another thing I didn't know about before I saw the movie was how great an influence the operas had on the whole entire country. I didn't know that the Emperor himself was involved in the operas. That he personally sat down with composers and talked to them about the music. He also played a little bit of music himself. In the movie they talked about how the operas would cause great disruptions within the people. At that time the operas were the main center of media, and had a great influence on the public. They showed a way of life that was unusual to the people of the day. They gave the audience a creative new way of thinking.

    1. I had known that Mozart had been a child prodigy and he was a leading figure of composers during his time, but I had no idea that he had performed at the Salzburg University at the age of five. Mozart was touring London, Paris, and other parts of Europe to perform concerts and pieces in front of royalty from the ages of seven to ten. At 11, Mozart had composed his first opera, Apollo et Hyacinthus. He was only 13 when the Archbishop of Austria had appointed Mozart to be the Concert Master at the Salzburg Court. Between 1774 and 1777, Mozart had composed all of his violin concertos as well as masses, symphonies. and chamber works. He left his position as Concert Master in 1780 and moved to Vienna where he would then marry Constanze Weber only two years later. Mozart wrote mostly sonatas, quartets, and would perform 15 piano concertos alone in the early to mid 1780's. Afterwards, he earned most of his commission off of Operas, including the masterpieces Le nozze di Figaro (1786), Don Giovanni (1787), Così fan tutte (1790), and Die Zauberflöte (1791). Mozart continued to travel and tour during his last few years and unfortunately died of a high fever in 1791.

    2. I found that the movie had portrayed Mozart as a reckless and young, immature man who would laugh hysterically and loved to make jokes and play pranks. However, I loved that he seemed a little insane, I couldn't imagine a person who could compose and play music at the age of four, to not be somewhat insane. It was sad to watch his ego take over his career throughout the movie that would eventually lead to his demise in 1791 when he died of a high fever. However, a rival composer, Antonio Salieri had believed that he had killed Mozart by leading him towards exhaustion by forcing him to compose a requiem that Salieri would try to take credit for after Mozart's death, but unfortunately the requiem is left unfinished as Mozart had died before finishing the piece. Religion was a major theme in this movie as Salieri believed that through Mozart, God was making fun of Salieri's music, by having a new composer gain fame instead of him. I think that because of Mozart's young age and vulnerability, his desire for money and fame led him to take on more work than he could ever handle, and his nonstop hardwork eventually led him to become ill, and he was never able to recover from it. I personally thought that the movie was great! I had no idea that there was so much competition between composers and so much drama that revolved around the arts in that time period. I am glad that I was able to learn so much more about the legendary Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

    1. During this movie about Mozart, I learned a lot about how he grew up as a child, very mature in his very young age. He was pressured to be very mature in his young age because of his father pushing him to excel in his great talent in music making and playing. Being this young age Mozart didn’t get to act as a child and be childish. That is why he has such a childish personality as an adult. Everyone expects a very mature adult but he is the exact opposite. It showed in his work by Mozart expecting he is the best and everything he makes will please the king but obviously not everything can. And that’s what happened and he got really hurt when he realized the king didn’t like it, a more mature person would take it as constructive criticism. But he didn’t.
    2. Another aspect of the movie I noticed was how Mozart lived his life. Very fancy and plentiful. Even though he was very stressed for money. Not knowing what composers make as a living, he looks as if he is very wealthy but in reality he is very poor. Not knowing how to pay for the next thing he takes a job to make music for a funeral, not knowing what the person wants he over works trying to get this piece of music done to his perfection. While working on this piece of music, he is also pressured with many more pieces and needs more time but does not have any time, he then stays up late working very hard to finish all these pieces of music. During one of his performances he passes out in the middle of conducting it, he then gets taken home and he then wakes up to find Salieri sitting with him and he explains what happened earlier. Salieri then finds Mozarts funeral piece and he has to explain why he is working on it because he is low on money. Salieri then offers to help Mozart finish it while Mozart is trying to rest in bed. During this very stressful time Mozart is trying to recover from passing out during his performance. He decides to take a break and rest a while, he then wakes up to his wife and child home and then dies a couple minutes later due to unknown reasons, but some say he worked himself to death. During this time I notice that Salieri had nothing to do with his death even though he got accused of killing Mozart.

    1. Before watching the movie Amadeus, i didn't know very much about Mozart. I was familiar with a few of his pieces from playing piano as a kid, but other than that i knew very little about his life. Something that i didn't know about Mozart, and what i found really interesting, was how he could listen to a piece of music, memorize it, and play it back flawlessly. I thought it was quite remarkable and very impressive that he was able to do everything by ear. In relation to him being able to memorize music and play it back, i also was amazed at how many pieces of work he had composed. Composing over 1,000 pieces whether it was opera, piano concertos, violin concertos, symphonies, etc, seems unimaginable to me, but this is something Mozart achieved in his lifetime.

    2. Another key theme that I picked up on in the film was how although Mozart was in fact the best composer of his time, he quite often showed little or no modesty at all. He frequently referred to himself as being the best, and carried himself in a way that exuded arrogance. The film also portrayed himself as being irresponsible, and towards the end before his death we could see how he was completely immersed only in his music, drinking, and attending parties. To me this showed that no matter how great your success is, or how great your image may be in the public's eye, you should never take that success or the people around you for granted. For Mozart this ended with him dying in poverty, and being buried in the general cemetery with other bodies, which didn't seem to honor or commemorate his life at all.

1- One thing I learned from the movie was that Mozart acted completely like a kid. He did not act like an adult most of the time. The way he didn't seem to take anything seriously besides his music. Even so, if someone didn't want him to do something with the music, like when something was banned, he would have still gone with it. Either that or he would change it but it would still be in a similar style. He was an amazing composer though. Very popular because people still recognize him to this day.
2- The second thing I learned was that Mozart tried hard to take care of his family though. He seemed to really care for his wife. Then later, seemed to care for his son. He was starting to get in debt, and he knew he'd have to make money so he could support his family. So he wrote for other people to get money. But he later got into a drinking problem and that just completely made him get sick leading to his death at the end of the movie.

I always thought Mozart was a mature guy who stayed on top of things. Someone who wrote operas, mature, and was not in debt. I thought he wouldn't have such a silly laugh either.

I was very shocked to learn that Mozart was such a troubled man. I guess i always imagined people to be so formal back in that time. I had no idea that he began showing his talent at such a young age. When i saw him at first i thought, no way. There was no way that Mozart was such i child. I assumed he was one of the multiple young men dressed up, talking about politics. I was also very surprised about his drinking and what not. Such a composer who can play the part so well and make such beautiful music? Crazy. I never would have imagined that two personalities so different could actually be the two halves to somebody as brilliant as Mozart.

I also found out how much of servants the composers were, rather than musicians. Yes, of course, they made very good music. I just found it crazy, that even though they were all their own men. Yet, they were always answering and sucking up to the king. This was very interesting to see how much power a monarch truly has. They completely overpower and rule those around them. I mostly noticed them answering to the king as though they owed him something. They were totally only rich because they pleased the monarch with their music.

1). Prior to watching this movie I had no knowledge about Mozart or about the musicians in his era in general. I never imagined somebody who composed such great works of music to be such an immature child who struggled paying bills and keeping his life on track, but I also couldn't imagine a composer composing great works and not bringing in tons of money. In 1862 Ludwig Von Kochel attempted to put Mozart's composed pieces in order and came up with a total of 626, and since than other pieces have been found and added in no possible way to say how many he actually composed. Among those works the movie mentioned The Magic Flute, Requiem Mass, and The Marriage of Figueroa.

2). In the movie it mentioned Mozart composed music for the marriage of Figueroa, which was banned in Vienna at the time. I couldn't help but wonder what drove him to want to put his career at risk for one piece. But he was able to get it approved and wrote it in just 6 weeks. He collaborated with Lorenzo De Pontie to write the words for the opera. In France at the time the opera was offensive and because of its licentiousness. The opera is about Figaro marring one of Dr. Bartolos staff. Before the marriage in that period of France it was okay for the head of the house to sleep with there servants, Figaro was trying to defy those laws and find a way Dr Bartolos would not have his way with her. This opera just so happened to be written just before the french revolution, and it encouraged people to go against the Royalty and laws.

    1) Before watching the movie Amadeus, i had never heard of the man, nor his story. My first impression of Mozart was how nonprofessional he was. He was an extraordinary composer, who created music that became a legend, but was surprised it came form a man with those manners. He seemed immature to me, to be married and have a child. Mozart would burst out laughing at some things that seemed inappropriate to laugh at, however did not care. He was very involved in writing his pieces, though sometimes too involved in my opinion. I noticed that his wife was the one caring for their son most the time, and he would go into a room and shut the door to write more pieces. It was common for him to sneak away from his wife and go get drunk as well, which i found interesting as the behavior of a famous composer.

    2) I focused a lot on the era the movie was based on, and compared it to today's world and society. I noticed the interaction between two people was very modest, and full of respect when talking to one another. I also noticed how conservative clothing was for woman, and how they were always dressed very fancy with wide dresses and hats. However, one thing that really caught my attention was how Mozart's body was handled when he died. They seemed to take him to a very gloomy cemetery. I was very surprised how they just dumped his body in a hole with the rest of other deceased men and women. I almost found it quite disrespectful how they handled bodies, let alone a famous composer. They seemed to treat his like like any other, lacking respect, even though he was such a legend in history.

I didn't really know much about Mozart at all the only thing I knew was that he composed music. So needless to say I really enjoyed this movie because there was a lot to learn. I found how people dressed in the 18th century very funny. People with a full head of hair would wear wigs. They would take masked costumes to parties. For example that costume that Mozart's father was wearing, it would be very strange if someone now adays showed up wearing that to a party. It made me wonder how people 300 years from now view the clothing that we wear now because what they would wear seemed a bit ridiculous.

Another thing I noticed in the movie was that Mozart was always living paycheck to paycheck and had trouble getting his music done on time. When I think of these famous composers I would always thought that they were the highest class of society with no concerns for money. In the movie Mozart made the king mad at him because he was being a "Brat" and called him a servant which just shows that these amazing composers were nothing but your average employee. I never learned that Mozart was German so that was interesting to find out.

Before watching the movie, I never was very knowledgeable on Mozart’s life. All I knew was that his music was and is quite popular. With this film I learned quite a bit about Mozart’s character, mostly his personality. Mozart was not humble at all and often he would state that he was extraordinary and the best of the time. Due to this aspect of his personality, he gained several enemies who would ultimately cause his downfall. Mozart also got around with several women and he never really seemed to feel faithful with his partner. And deep down in his character you could tell that Mozart was still a child. He would try to live without a care in the world. Mozart would also not feel any responsibility for anything at all.
Another thing I learned because of this movie is how dreadful Mozart’s life was. Even though he partied all of the time and lived in the moment, he never was able to keep happiness. His happiness was always short lived and would go as quickly as it came. A good example of this would also be his money. He would always spend all of his money for short term pleasures but would often cause his family to go in debt. And due to debt, he and his wife would feel very depressed. His wife would then force him to write plays quickly in order to try to be financially stable again. Also his rival would make his life horrible because he would always make things so much more difficult for him. The saddest part of the movie was how Mozart thought that his rival actually was his friend who would be there for his last moments, but in actuality it was his rival who was striving to get revenge.

    1. One of the overarching themes in the movie, Amadeus, is that genius doesn't always come to those people that deserve it. As we saw in the movie, Mozart was a dirty and somewhat shallow man. His morals were out of whack and treated the people that he was closet to horribly. Salieri saw right through Mozart's tactics and seemingly genius qualities. What infuriated Salieri is the same thing that infuriated the audience of the film- Mozart didn't deserve to be the mouthpiece of the music he composed.
    2. The choice for the role of Mozart, Tom Hulce was a great one for the part. His ability to switch from happy-go-lucky to complete sincerity was a large factor in his success as Mozart. And that laugh, good lord. That laugh toed the line of complete insanity and made the audience cringe with a mix of awkwardness and annoyance. The scenes of Mozart conducting and composing his pieces are where we see his genius that he doesn't deserve shine through. At those moments, the audience falls in love with him. But then quicker than you can say 'lickety-split' he's right back at his womanizing and dirty ways.

    1) Something I was interested in by was that fact that Mozart was not an amazing person. We hear of these legendary musicians and celebrities, but don't always know them for who they were because clearly we have no way of ever knowing them. I personally never knew that Mozart was a very selfish, ignorant man. Beyond his shallow personality though, his talent was overpowering. Is it right that such horrible people can get such recognition because they do possess amazing talents? Seems incredibly messed up but raw talent can't be denied and life has never been fair. I was surprised to learn that such a name also comes with such a negative connotation.
    2) I have always been very intrigued by amazing musicians as they work. The way the some minds have the power to put notes together in their minds and create such great works is outstanding. I loved seeing how he composed, whether with actual passion or not and still created master pieces every single time that more or less everyone thought were marvelous. The idea here is that I enjoyed learning and seeing the process people go through in creating music and in operas. He had to consider who was playing the roles and how to dress them and how to choreograph the scene. Different from simple track recorded music, there is a lot more to the production of an opera than simply a play or an album.

First off, it was interesting to see the lifestyle from that time. Also seeing that the King hired Mozart to write plays for his own entertainment and not for others.
And how he was really an innovator of the theatrical arts creating new ways to make theater. the movie was a little slow at times but i really enjoyed it.

When we started to watch Amadeus in class on Monday my first thoughts were kind of negative. I was confused and I couldn't figure it out why we are watching a movie that was supposed to be about Mozart and not about Salieri. As the movie progressed it made more sense and by the end it became one of my favorite movies since it was telling me how Mozart one of my favorite music composer has grown up and lived his life and also the movie included a lot of astonishing music's and some parts were heavily based on writing song's and mentioning terms which only musicians can understand and I was one of them. At the end of the movie I was really disappointed, not in the movie but the way they burried Mozart. It was heartbreaking to see my favorite music composer and a very smart men burried like that. In my opinion he deserved much better or at least a proper burial site/tomb. Still, the movie did it's best to make it as real and credotable as much as they can. Another thing that surprised me is that Mozart was a lot less mature than I imagoned. When I was reading biographies and just hearing his name I always imagined a men who was respectable, loyal, and incredibly smart since he wrote dozens of operas and hundreds of songs. In Amadeus, Mozart is everything except the men that I imagined whenever I heard his name. The way he lived his life was his own fault. If he would of have stopped drinking and listen to his wife then he would of have lived a much happier and less stressful life, but instead he lived for his music more than for his family.

1.) Although I missed the beginning of the movie, I was still able to pick up a plethora of information. When I use to play piano, my teacher would tell me information about various composers, Mozart included. However, I can't recollect her telling me the fact that Mozart was an alcoholic. Seeing all the masterpieces he was able to make throughout years while struggling with alcoholism, borderline personality disorder, and several other mental illnesses was very interesting for me. His music was the only thing keeping him on the edge of sanity. It was shocking to me that his wife never really tried to help and support him. Instead, she tried to stop him when it was too late.
2.) It was very intriguing looking into how it would be like to live in the 18th century. It seemed as though a lot of wealthy families and husbands and wives depended on the performances as a source of entertainment. I can see why Mozart really wanted to be known for his music, other than the obvious hard work he put into his art. Mozart's fame would continuously grow if one opera became a hit, so I could definitely understand his perseverance to keep his opera going, rather than having it banned.

I found this movie quite insightful and not what I had expected. I really knew nothing of Mozart before experiencing the film except for that I knew Mozart was a famous composer. I was somewhat confused by the personality of Mozart. When I think famous composer, I think of a pish posh fancy shmancy persona. However Mozart had a childish personality. The scene where he was talking to his wife and making her guess what he was saying backwards made me wonder if Mozart actually acted like that. It's weird to think that such smart and aspiring people can be such idiots. Also that laugh made me want to punch through the screen. Not he laughed at was funny at all. He was just plain ole obnoxious. So basically his personality sucked but his talents as a composer were amazing. The way he could just come up with masterpiece melodies on the spot was amazing. Also he knew immediately what instruments he wanted in the piece and he knew when to make adjustments. It's amazing to me that composers like Mozart can just think up a song and can literally hear it playing in their head. That's a true talent.

I actually enjoyed watching this film as opposed to the other movies we have watched this year. What I first noticed in this film was Amadeus' s obnoxious laughter and dirty jokes. I didn't know much about him but learned that he had a high pitched laugh and told obscene jokes. I was taken back a bit when I found out that composers of the time were treated like servents and made very little. When Amadeus past he was put into a reusable coffin to be dumped into a mass grave with lye sprinkeled over him.

The first part of the movie that really caught my attention was that Salieri was so incredibly focused on becoming immortal via music. He told us right off the bat that he wanted to be remembered through the ages for his musical prowess. I can understand wanting to be remembered, but he seemed so scared of not leaving his mark. Obviously as soon as Mozart showed up he lost almost all hope of outshining the prodigy. But it was his loss of motive that drove him to do what he did. The actions taken towards Mozart were purely out of jealousy, that his life goal had been taken by some punk. This kind of zealotry against your rival is unheard of in the modern era, I wonder if all composers of that time shared the fear of Salieri; that their works will not impress.
The Second interesting fact that drew my attention was that Mozart was so incredibly young when he started composing. Truly a "divine being" if there ever was one. To the extent of my knowledge, I thought he very gradually rose to the level of skill that he attained by the end. It blew my mind that anyone could learn that fast. I'll admit he developed a few quirks as the other posts have claimed, but that comes with having so much responsibility thrust upon you at a young age.

Idea one: Mozart was killed by vitamin D deficiency. This is an idea I have been thinking about since the movie ended. It is the theory of his death that makes the most sense to me. The normal vitamin D count is about 50-60. Living in washington, most of ours is about 10. By Mozart being inside all the time his level must have significantly dropped. I lack of vitamin D can cause bone cancer, mal nutrition and other health problems. This is what most likely killed him.

Idea two: If Mozart wasn't alive, Salieri would have been a bigger influence. It is quite a shame that they lived in the same time period. It seemed that Salieri felt belittled by Mozart, which i'm sure we all would feel due to his impecable writing skills. Another example of a hero overshaddowing the rest is Seabiscut and his opponent. They were both way above the pack. If they lived at different times, they would both be remembered and great.

    1) I thought it was interesting how immature Mozart was. He loved to have fun and joke around with people which I find refreshing. I find this refreshing because back in the 18th century it seemed like there were not people who acted like this. His laugh was a big part of what made him so comical as well. Over all I though Mozart was a very funny, immature, creative, smart, nice man. One thing that kind of flawed his personality was his decision making. He was a heavy drinker who seemed to care a little too much about work and not enough about his family.
    2) I thought most of the operas in this movie were very entertaining. The one I liked the most was the one his friend preformed with all the little people. One thing I noticed when Mozart was how naturally the writing of operas was for Mozart. He was able to vision the music to the play in his head which i think for a profession like that, it would be very important. He was truly a genous of the time.

    1. I thought it was interesting how naturally talented he was. I dont know for sure if it was natural talent but it seemed that way. He got to work with people he idolized and showed them up. I find it really cool that the people he looked up to were his kinda like coworkers and some eventually turned into his rivals. As a kid you always dream about your idols someday becoming your coworkers. But you never in your wildest dreams would imagine they would become your rival. And further more that they would try to destroy you because of their jealousy.
    2. THe other thing I thought was interesting was how he never really grew up. And by that I mean multiple things. He always had a fun outlook on life and was always laughing in that high pitch way. Which is a good thing I think, but in some situations it is not a good thing because he never knew when to be serious and how to react to serious situations. He also didnt grow up in the sense that he prioritized music over everything including his family and the second highest priority was drinking and partying. Drinking caused him to lose everything from his family to eventually his life. Drinking put a end to a geniuses life way before it should have ended.

Two things that I learned from the movie was that Mozart was not who I expected him to be and that life at that time was much different than it is romantisized to be. I expected Mozart to be a serious man who focused on work and did not agree with shinanagins. I was right about being a hardworker, but Mozart's behavior was one joke hysterically laughed to the next. He was anything but serious. The only times that I saw Mozart being serious was when he begged for help from the court composer and when he had a quill and parchment in hand.

I also found that the lifestyle was much different that I had imagined. People lived in big houses and were driven in horse-drawn carrages but no one but the emperior seemed happy to live thier life. Even the emperior didn't seem estactic to rule. It seemed like so no one was satisfied with their life and that this artistically beautiful time in history was very boring and sad. At the parties taht we saw Mozart go to, it seemed like everyone came to these parties looking for an escape. They all wore masks so that no one knew their identies and they could let loose and take off some stress. Outside of these socialite parties, almost no one smiled (except for Mozart, inappropately). I knew that in this time period people were a bit uptight, I didn't expect to see so many miserable faces.

1.) Something I learned from watching the film was that Mozart was not well liked. This was surprising to me because I thought that's what made him famous. I didn't know that it was years later that his work was finally appreciated. In the movie it was Salieri who was popular and whom the emperor wanted to see. But now days no one really knows about him where as Mozart is almost a household name.

2.) Another thing I didn't know was how goofy Mozart's personality was. I'm not sure if that's just how the film portrayed it, but his character was often not taken seriously regarding his childish behaviors. This was also interesting to me because he had such a complex mind. Just being able to think of how the opera he was composing would sound and look like without seeing was crazy. Although the film kind of did make him seem a little crazy. I also didn't expect him to be so young. This could have also played a role in the immaturity he portrayed in the film. When I heard the name Mozart before it made me think of a really old man.

The biggest thing that I noticed about Mozart was how immature he was. It seemed like he only cared about himself and making himself look good through his operas. He never payed any attention to his family and he was constantly working. His partying was very immature. When he wasn't writing he was out drinking. He was always making jokes at bad moments and he would always laugh at his own jokes even though they weren't funny. His laugh was very annoying and weird. He was also always spending money and never saved any of it.
I also learned about Salieri and how big he was in Europe. I was very surprised at big he was before Mozart came into the scene. Although he was mean to Mozart, he was a very humble and passionate person. I liked him a lot more then Mozart because he was very mature. I found his music very interesting and entertaining. I liked all of his music pieces and they where very well-written. I'm surprised that Mozart took over so quickly because of how popular Salieri was. Overall, Salieri was my favorite character in the movie.
