I've learned a lot in Humanities this year, only in the first Semester. I never thought I'd like/ appreciate the arts, until this year. And your enthusiam and care has made the class that more enjoyable, because you prep us ahead of time before we see the performances. You're a great memorable teacher. The first thing that was most memorable to me first semester, was seeing A Servant of Two Masters. I never thought there were many comedy plays like that in the Humanities realm. I will never forget that play, every moment of it made me laugh harder than the previous. It was such a wonderful production all together, the lighting, the outfits, and most importantly, the actors personalities all together as a cast. I learned that Humanities plays have many different genres. The second memorable thing this year from Humanities, was making our timeline for this semester. It's really interesting actually and I've learned a lot about when famous musicians/ artists etc. were born which I never would of known. And last, the 3rd most memorable thing I've learned this semester were all the facts about the Italian Renaissance, which my group studied for our Art History Project. We learned a lot about their style of clothes, their music etc. For example, we learned that Michelangelo painted a lot of frescos during his lifetime, which I hadn't known before. It's been a great semester and I look forward to the rest of our shows& will be sad for all of it to be over in June!
In this semester I have learned a lot from humanities. Firstly I learned that I really like plays and operas, like Servant of Two Masters and Much Ado About Nothing. Through these experiences I have a new appreciation for the arts. Both of these plays were very well done and memorable. I can’t wait to go to more plays in the future. Secondly, I also found all the art periods very interesting, I never new just how many there really were. My own art period, Rococo was really interesting. I also liked the other periods like Greek and Roman art. Those projects were really cool because I can still see some of those art forms today in clothing styles and ect. I’m really excited to continue learning more about our next set of art periods next semester. And lastly I really enjoyed putting together our timeline in class. I was really able to see how everything fits together and when things took place which was interesting. Overall I really enjoy this class. It is very different than anything else I have ever taken before. And I know I will be able to use my new knowledge of plays and operas in the future.
One of the most memorable tools I have gained from humanities this semester is the ability to understand and appreciate the world's art, literature and music. Before this class, I would view a piece of art like an ordinary object and not really appreciate where or how it came about. Learning about the background and the stories of the pieces we have studied, has made me realize the importance of them and how it has affected our culture even today. Another thing I have gained this semester is a sense of where we have come from. So far, this class has provided all the benefits of a history course but, rather than focusing on the battles, dates and names, it has given me a sense of how things fit together. Another thing I have gained this semester is the development of skills that I will use in almost any workforce. The ability to reflect upon one's understandings, to be open to others, and to express one's ideas verbally and in writing in an informative and interesting manner are all things that will prove to be valuable. Humanities is sort of like a language in the sense of art, architecture, literature, music, dance, and film. After taking this class, I feel like I have a better sense of this "language" and appreciate the culture that comes with all of it.
I never knew I was going to enjoy humanities as much as I have this first semester. I have learned so much about art. One of the most memorable moments was going and seeing The Servant of Two Masters. The plays I have ever attended were back in elementary and we never really studied about the performances we were seeing. Being able to learn and read the play beforehand really helped me enjoy the performance much more. I don't think I will ever attend an opera or play with out learning about it beforehand. Another memorable moment was the art history project. I never knew there were so many components to art history. There was literature, music, architecture, paintings, photographs, etc. What I gained most out of that project was learning the reasoning behind each era and what the meaning to it. For realism I learned it was to show people the cold hard truth in the daily life, wether it was ugly or beautiful. My third most memorable moment in Humanities was just gaining all the knowledge in the 1st semester. I never would have thought I would have this clear of an understanding. This class helped me understand what Humanities really is and to appreciate it.
Three most memerable things that I learned in Humanties this year were the different types of singing, the eras of opera and also the vast types of opera styles. I had no idea that signing opera had different styles, let alone eras. I understood eras with art and fashion and such, but I had never applied it to singing and the preforming arts. Belle Conto, which of course mean beautiful singing, is a gorgeous sound and I really liked the story lines that went along with that era of singing. I am a sucker for a forbidden love story. When we talked about oedipus rex, I learned about the different types of Asian preformance styles. The use of puppets and make up were creative and added a new layer to the operas. Overall, I think I have learned a lot from this class and hope to learn much more.
Conor Grasso Period 3 I think the biggest thing i learned this year was just the overall experience of going to a performing arts show. More specifically, i had a real experience in an opera and play instead of imagining the clique fat woman singing at the end of the opera. I enjoyed watching the props and lighting at work to create the stage, and was impressed at how loud people can sing. I also learned a lot about foreign arts, like Oedipus Rex that was done in the Japanese theater (thought that one was a bit weird) and also the operas you saw in Germany and shared with us. Japanese opera caught my eye because of the differences in costumes used, as well as the general plots of the story. I remember there was a man, who was really a fox, who was talking to a drum because the skin used to make the drum was his mother or father, and when he's reunited with the drum he gets so happy he flies away. I wouldn't have been able to make that kind of thing up, so it was a surprise to me. The art periods are another topic i learned a lot about, I had a little prior knowledge of that subject before this class, but it was only knowing that certain art periods existed at some point. I had no idea what styles they were, what period of time, and what artists made which pieces of art. I wouldve liked to have a more generalized project on the art periods (meaning incorporating all the periods per group of people) instead of one project that focused everyone on one specific period.
This class was nothing like I expected it to be, however in a good way. I learned a lot in just the short semester of this class and I'm definitely looking forward to the next semester! I think that the three biggest things that I learned in this semester were how to actually appreciate the arts, the difference between different performing arts, and several different aspects of art history as a whole. When I signed up for the class, I had no idea we would be going to see plays and operas! I just heard that it was a fun class, but I have actually really enjoyed taking trips to the opera house and different theatres to experience this years performances. There's such an elegance and beauty to each and every performance we've been to, and I can actually understand some of the pieces we've seen that I would have never enjoyed before taking this class. I am so excited for next semester, and even to see the arts later on in life. Another thing I learned In this semester was how every performance was so different from one another. The plays and operas and symphony's are all different yet exciting. Although I liked some more than others, I can see the huge difference between performances. For example, the first play servant of two masters was hysterical and nothing like I expected, and the second play we saw, much ado about nothing, was not as funny but still had a great story to tell. Also there was a huge difference in the two operas we saw as well. I think some people may categorize all of the arts into one category, when really they are so diverse. Another thing that I learned during this semester was about art history! Although we didn't spend a lot of time going over specific details and events, while learning about the overall art periods I can see how everything comes together into what we have today. I saw several familiar things in our power points and timelines and I was finally able to piece them all together. I like learning about art history because its more than just boring old history, and its a lot easier to understand and relate to. Overall this was a great class, and I have learned a lot from it. Schindler is a great teacher who always teaches bell to bell and I cant wait for next semester.
Over the course of the first semester, i've learned a lot of valuable things in humanities. Overall, i've learned a lot through the experiences of going to the plays and operas. Before this year i was never really exposed to the performing arts, and i enjoyed reading the stories and plots in class before hand so that i knew what was going on and could enjoy the performance. Another element of humanities that i will never forget during the time of the first semester is the amount of energy and enthusiasm within the class as a whole. I've made a lot of new friends this year, which is something i didn't expect seeing as it is our third year in high school. Finally, i will never forget the kindness and adorableness of Mr. Schindler. I really respect the way he respects other students, and allows us as a class and individually to express ourselves how we please. Every day i am always excited to go to humanities because Mr. Schindler makes the class so much fun, and i am exciting for the second semester!
Learning about the the different eras of the past was one of the most memorable things about this class. This is something that I will probably never forget because it is something that we have talked about so much. This is actually very good to know because you can relate certain events to today's life. This also was one of the most fun things to learn about in the class. Next, I remember a lot about the different singers and also the different types of singing. You always were able to see all of the different types of singing in each of the presentations and plays. The singing always made the plays a lot more fun and enjoyable. The 3rd thing that I learned in this class was the different fashions that went along in the different era's. We all learned about the different types of fashion when everybody presented the power points on the different era's and time periods. There was many different things that I learned but these three were the most fun to learn.
Spencer Read Period 4 I honestly enjoyed this class. I found that we were able to use a lot of our own insight and thoughts on most all of our assignments, and were allowed a good free-range in and out of the class room. We were able to think and act like adults, rather than be leashed and kept in like little children. One of my most memorable experience was when I first got to the top of the stairs at the Seattle Opera house. The hugeness of the theatre and how massive it truly was, was amazing. It was also very stunning, seeing as it was so massive and spacious, whilst being in the middle of the city. Another favorite experience of mine in this class was the event of going to Seattle for a performance. I personally really enjoyed the act of going to Seattle with friends for an event, seeing people from school. It was fun because it was always kind of like a field trip. One final thing that i will always remember about this semester is how relaxing and mentally refreshing of a class it was. The information has always felt so fresh in my mind, and it is a class in which the information really interests me. The combination of music, a fun teacher, and interesting historical knowledge, made it a really great class to have, especially during senior year. I'm looking forward to the next few months of it. It will be very interesting seeing how it unfolds, and where the rest of the year takes us. I really enjoyed the class.
the first semester of this class has been very fun and full of memorable times! i would say the most interesting thing i saw this semester would be when i was taking the bus to a play on sunday. it was in the afternoon and it was me Laney and two other people and about half way through the ride some very interesting people got on. this was right before halloween and on the bus came a family dressed as adventure time (a show). the dad was dressed as Finn the mom as Princes bubble gum and their baby as a T. Rex. yeah it was pretty cool.
Humanities is unlike any English class I have ever taken at any school I have attended. This is a good thing because usually I do not enjoy English class. There have been a quite a few memorable moments over the first semester of 4th period humanities. The first thing I have most enjoyed in this class is Mr. Schindler. Mr. Schindler is the root of what makes this class enjoyable. He is in a good mood everyday and very passionate about what he teaches. His humor is probably what is most enjoyable and a nice break from the stress of the day. The second most memorable thing about humanities was the performances. It was really fun to be able to go to Seattle and spend time with friends and dress up for the operas/plays. It was also kind of fun to take the bus there; it was like a little fieldtrip. The last most memorable thing about humanities was the art projects. It was nice to be able to gain some culture and learn about the many different art periods. Overall, humanities has been a fun experience and a beneficial class. It has given me insight into operas, plays, symphonies and performing arts in general, which is something I would not have had any interest in without this class.
Until this year I had never gone to an Opera, orchestra, or Seattle play before. I have never taken a class that has given me opportunities like Humanitites has. One memorable thing I have learned this Semester was how Operas are produced and presented. The first Opera we went to, the Daughter of the Regiment was interesting to see the Operahouse and how everything was laid out. Such as how the stage was set up, how the orchestra was playing underneath the stage, and it amazed me how much the singers projected their voice! Another memorable thing I learned/experienced this semester was how everyone should respect each other no matter their differences. This class is very outgoing, outspoken, honest and sometimes crude. The class is sort of an escape from the rest of the school day. Which is nice to have in a classroom setting, making it more comfortable to express yourself. Another thing I learned was my navigating knowledge around the Seattle Center. Before going to all of these events I didn't know much about the downtown area, whereas now I am much more familiar with it. If you dropped me off in the middle of the Seattle Center I could find QFC, Starbucks, and other various destinations. This is awesome since I'm a local! This year has been fantastic, thanks Schindler, for being you.
So far in this class I have learned a lot. I have learned that I actually enjoy the musicals and operas more than I thought I would. I think the class is fun, and like that it's kind of independent. As in we have to remember each week to do our blogs, and that it's our responsibility to go to the operas. I really like the setting of this class because it's a very friendly open environment. It's not so much raising your hand, and strict. I like the rides to Seattle and eating in town. this bus rides were also fun, on the two I went on. I really enjoyed the play "Much Ado About Nothing." It was probably the easiest fro me to understand, and I really liked how small the theater was and how close you were to the actors. My favorite opera so far was Rigoletto. I thought this had the prettiest setting out of everything we have seen. Also it was easy to follow. Overall I really enjoy this class, and am really glad I chose to take it. Thanks for a great first semester Schindler!
So far, humanities has been the best class I've taken this semester. I love how this is more than just a typical English class where you read novels, write boring essays, etc. Instead, you learn about the best arts, literature, and the music. Out of those 3, I loved the music. Out of all the music periods, I loved learning about music during the Renaissance, Neoclassical, and the Romantic periods. One of the most memorable things I learned was about the composer Giuseppe Verdi. I found it remarkable how he was able to use a story from the play(Le Roi S'amuse by Victor Hugo) and write his music to transform it into an opera. It's interesting how the loss of his family affected his style of his compositions. If it wasn't for that, he would have wrote more comic operas. It's remarkable to hear that he finally did break out of depression, where he wrote his one and only comic opera, Falstaff. Another memorable thing I learned was the morals from Rigoletto, Much Ado about Nothing, and Oedipus Rex. From Rigoletto, I learned that in society, evil(Duke of Mantua) is made to live longer while the good(Gilda, Maddalena?) die young. From Much Ado about Nothing and Oedipus Rex, I learned that if you give someone hell, it will haunt you back just like it happened to Don John(Much Ado about Nothing) and Oedipus(Oedipus Rex). The 3rd memorable thing I learned was how music evolved until today. From listening to all the opera music at the Seattle Opera, in class, etc. I learned the real purpose of music. Its used by special tones to tell stories with its plots. Back when I was young, I didn't enjoy classical opera music but now I do because I know how it changed the lifespan of music on earth. Out of all the performances I went to, my top 3 are 1. Rigoletto, 2. Servant of Two Masters, 3. Much Ado about Nothing. Thanks for the great semester. I love eating in Seattle and hanging out with friends there. In fact, if I ever try to convince my sophomore/junior friends who haven't taken your class yet, I know exactly how to do it. Thanks Schindler for changing my view of classical music. And I hope to see more great literature, hear more stunning classical music, and attend better performances to come.
Of everything that we learned about first semester, I think my third favorite thing we learned this semester was the comedia del arte (I hope that's spelled right) masks and theatre style. My brother and I have always loved the masks, so learning more about them and the characters behind them. My second favorite thing was probably the different time periods. That was likely because I really enjoyed the period I was given, Realism. I enjoyed the details in the artwork and loved the style realist artists used. And finally, my very favorite thing was the types of Japanese theatre. In all of my history classes I've taken thus far in school, Japan is minimally covered, with only a small glance at the feudal age. I thought it was great to experience more of their culture this year and learn about their envisioning of theatre (being a part of the theatre department myself.) And the different styles they use that are so unique and different compared to our style in America. Over all, I've LOVED this class, it's been amazing for me.
