1. Classical Greek art went through a transition from abstract to realistic art. I found it fascinating how much the ancient greeks evolved. By the end of the period the statues were very lifelike with extreme detail.
ReplyDelete2. Medieval literature was all hand written and hand copied. That must have taken so long! I also thought it was interesting how they used lamb skin for paper. They treasured the books so much that they kept them locked up.
3. Paintings were usually on walls and ceilings instead of canvas. The buildings of this era must have been so beautiful. The sad thing is many of these murals were destroyed or painted over.
4. The statues in the Gothic era were usually built into buildings. I think this is really cool because entire scenes were carven into these buildings. The pictures that I saw reminded me of the New York Stock Exchange building. THe amount of work that went into each of these buildings was huge.
5. Operas emerged during the Italian Renaissance. This was a huge event in art history because operas combined so many art forms. Architecture, painting, singing, acting, and instruments were all included in these productions.

1.I learned that during the Medieval Period, books were sacred and locked up. I also learned that the books were made of calf and lamb skins. I thought this was really interesting, because now books are freely sold and read. It's also interesting to see how times have changed, and we generally don't use animal skin for book covers. The books were also hand written, so if they had to copy them for sale, they would have to re write the entire book. Where as now, we copy millions at a time.
2. I learned that during the Romanesque Period, embroidery was a big deal. The materials used were wool& linen. The embroidered pieces told a story. This is important, because it shows one of the really key forms of art during the Romaneque Period.
3. I learned from the Gothic Period, that the Black Plague occured during this time. This was very important, because the people turned to the Catholic Church. This is where a lot of the influence came during the time period, in the architecture and art.
4. I learned that during the Classical Greek Era, there was different eras. During the Archaic Era (700-480 B.C.), ceramics were huge. I learned that black figure pottery was a big deal at the time. The pottery commonly had egyptian style print. This is important, because it was such a major form of art at the time.
5. I learned that during the Roman Art Period that their sculptures started off in the classical Greek Style, and later became idealistic. Bronze/ precious metals were used for their sculptures. When the sculptures became idealistic, they were more what the artists envisioned, and not reality. The sculptures were nearly perfect. This was a key form of art during the Roman Art Period.

1. During the Midieval Era of Art they locked up their written forms of literature. They treasured all of their writings and art so much that it had to be sacred and hidden. Whereas today we are used to seeing books in nearly every room we walk into, it's interesting how they viewed the books differently back then before the printing press was invented which increased the spread of literature.
2. In the Romanesque Era their paintings were primarily done as murals and manuscripts rather than canvases. Their works of art were larger and made to stay "in place" rather than canvases that could be moved around. I think it's interesting because these works of arts may still be in tact to look at today, they haven't moved from their original position.
3. I thought it was interesting that the Gothic Era was a direct outcome of the Black Plague and Protestant Reformation. At this time the printing press was invented and people began questioning the authority of the church after various interpretations of the bible arose. It's amazing how such inspiration can lead to brand new mediums and types of art that the Gothic Era is known for.
4. During the Roman Art Era it caught my attention that their sculptures artwork changed styles throughout the era. At first they were very realistic and depicted humans as they were. Although later they depicted a more idealistic look, how humans would "best" look, making them look more like gods. It's similar to the Greek Era, where as time went on the sculptures became more detailed, perfect and reflected humans as gods.
5. The Northern Renaissance had the ability to make several copies of their artwork and paintings because at that time the Printing Press was invented. This is interesting that they still saw each copy as an original, even though it was multiplied several times. This also caused books to become more attainable, creating a higher literacy. In comparison to other eras, it'd be interesting to compare their literacy and spread of artwork because of the printing press.

1. I learned that in Greek art they have 3 major periods. They had the Mycenean age, classical age and Hellenisn. There sculputures were mainly of women. During the classical age bracelets became a big thing and they wore them in sets.
2. The Romans had two different types of houses they had the domus and insula. They used a lot of hellenistic philosophy. Instead of normal murals they did plaster murals so it would last longer.
3. During the Midieval era they had lots of churches. The churches had lots of windows so the day light could shine through the windows because they didnt have much electricity. They had lots of art at this time and most of the art was filled with bright and vivid colors.
4. The Northern Renaissance was a new rise in the economy. The printing press in 1436 was created at this time by a guy named Johannes Gutenberg. The printing press caused books to become a higher literacy.
5. During the gothic era the black plague happened. Lots of people turned to religion. Churches became very popular and more and more catholic churches were being built.

1. I learned that Greek art is classified into four different ages: Mycenaen, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic. In the Mycenaen age, most sculptures were of women. Archaic was the age or revolution, also known as structural revolution. The Classical age was when politics were introduced more so and also theaters and festivals were started. And the Hellenistic age was where the first museums and libraries began.
2. I learned that Roman art was mainly focused on the human. In this era, women and men were starting to be romanticized. Sculptures were focused on the beauty of the ideal human. And towards the end of this era, there was a later focus on beings/things.
3. I learned that in the medieval era, art did not have that much detail. The backgrounds of paintings had little perspective. The faces of the people had little emotion and the bodies were very stiff. And the use of vivid colors was very popular.
4. I learned that in North Renaissance art, the art was more naturalistic. They started to paint with landscape and the people looked more realistic. This era was also known as Modern Devotion and was found everywhere but Italy. Since there was a greater desire to separate from the Roman Catholic Church, Humanism became very popular.
5. I learned that the Mannerism era was the transition period between the Renaissance and Baroque. This emerged in Italy. Common features were elongated proportions and highly stylized poses. In this period the Catholic Church was also starting to lose power.

1. I learned that the art in the Mannerism era was distorted and abstract. This was very different from classical art, which was very realistic. It also showed a change in how people viewed their world in their art.
2. I learned that the Great statue of Zeus was a seven wonder of the World until it was destroyed. This showed to me that the Greeks were amazing artists, enough to be recognized as a wonder. The Greeks must have though highly of their Gods, and their art, and it was reflected in their statues.
3. I though it interesting in medieval times that their fashion was mostly wool burlap, with no synthetic materials. I would think that being in a more civilized world that the Greeks, that they would use more extravagant materials to wear. Synthetic material is fiber that is created from natural materials or a chemical process, I would think a king or queen would want this relatively new process for themselves.
4. I learned that the Leaning Tower of Pisa was made during the Romanesque period. This was a huge feat to build during that time where architecture was more like big buildings with stained glass windows. It was also historic for Galileo’s acceleration experiment.
5. In the Italian Renaissance, there were the greatest artist, like Raphael, Donatello, Titian, and Sandre. They made some of the most recognizable art for their time. They made art such as The Birth of Venus, and the Assumption of the Virgin.
Mimi Gerhardt, Period 4
ReplyDelete1. While learning about the Medieval Art Era, I learned that their literature typically consisted of religious writings. This didn't really surprise me, considering that during most earlier eras, religion was a big part of their lifestyle. Other forms of art that were commonly religious were music and paintings.
2. During the Gothic Period, I learned that stained glass was a very common piece of artwork. These pieces of artwork were typically found in churches so the inside of the building would look very beautiful and holy. I also learned that people during the Gothic Era were very illiterate, so they were taught stories by the pictures made in the stained glass.
3. Mannerism was shortly after the Italian High Renaissance and was greatly influenced by it. The architecture was very similar and was affected by the Renaissance. Likewise to the Renaissance, the Mannerist centers in Italy consisted of Rome, Florence, and Mantua.
4. Unlike the Italian Renaissance, the Northern Renaissance kept with the Gothic style. Their paintings were very realistic and detailed, and had a lot of symbolism. The paintings during the time were inspired by the Bible, and their paintings were made by using a printing press.
5. Roman fashion was nothing out of the ordinary, consisting of sandals and the men wearing togas. However, I was quite surprised to hear that men were required to wear at least one piece of jewelry; why was that a rule? Another fashion statement that shocked me was that women who were prostitutes at the time wore togas! I never would've expected that!

1. The Greek period was actually split into four sub-ages, the Mycenaean age, Archaic age, Classical age, and Hellenistic age. The architecture in the Mycenaean age was high, thick walls for protection due to the constant war. Cities increased in the Archaic age, politics were introduced in the Classical age, and theaters were introduced in the Hellenistic age.
2. In the Roman age, low-class citizens lived in Insulas, apartment like buildings, while high-class citizens lived in domūs with rooms surrounding an atrium. People were also split up by what they wore. Women wore very colorful clothing, whereas men did not. This is when the arch was perfected, using the top piece of stone known as the keystone.
3. In the Medieval time period, churches came into wealth. Stained glass was very popular. Powerful figures were larger in paintings than the other figures. In everything, vivid colors were used.
4. The Gothic art period influenced all other art after its time (1140-1500). Stained glass was also very popular in the Gothic period, with red and blue being predominant colors. In architecture, pointed arches and ribbed vaults were used.
5. I learned that the Northern Renaissance grew the economies in the countries it occurred in and allowed competition with Italy. The Netherlands came the closest to beating out Italy. The art focused on the emotions of the figures rather than the features. Most artists portrayed demons and fiends in their paintings during this time period.

1. During the Roman era I learned about the coliseum. This was important because it entertained thousands of people. It was a place for people to gather and have a good time. It was also good for the economy.
2. During the Medieval time I learned that spiritual thinking was very present. Philosophers argued about the existence of God. Most art incorporated inner spiritual presence instead of what was just on the outside. Also books were considered to be sacred.
3. During the Romanesque era I learned about their buildings. Most of their paintings were on the ceilings. They were built with marble. Also their statues were built directly into the buildings.
4. During the Gothic Period I learned about their stained glass. They had massive stained glass windows that covered most of the walls. The added light was supposed to give the rooms a more holy feel. Most people were illiterate, so they learned through the pictures instead of words.
5. The Italian Renaissance was a time of change. People were growing towards modern life. The art showed more individualism. But still emphasized perfection and intellectual greatness.
1. During the Romanesque era, brighter colors were used than in the Byzantine era. This is important because it represents development. Byzantine influenced other styles, but these styles were still respectively different.
ReplyDelete2. During the Gothic era, lots of very detailed architecture was done. This architecture was extremely beautiful. This architecture was commonly done in churches. It is historically important.
3. "She wolves" were an aspect of Roman art, and used in some sculptures and stories. These she wolves were symbolic of women. During these periods of art, animals in general were heavily symbolic.
4. Togas were considered the attire of prostitutes during the Roman era. This is interesting because that is not what we would classify them as today. This shows the cultural and societal differences from then to now.
5. The Northern Renaissance featured a lot of Gothic art. This inspiration was taken from greek. Some of the art of this era included frescoes, illuminated landscapes, sculptures, and paintings. A different way of portraying the human body emerged at this time.

4. From the history of Gothic Art, I learned that frescoes, a technique for wall painting was very popular. Pane painting, a technique using wood panels, was also common during this time. Stain glass continued as a preferred technique, specifically with reds and blues.
5. From the history of Mannerism, I learned it was an age known for intellectual sophistication. Sculptures during this time also tended to be life-size or larger. Popular artists from the Age of Mannerism were Michelangelo, Raphael and Da Vinci.

1. Paintings were usually on walls and ceilings instead of canvas. This is important because its not how we see it today. When we think of paintings, we think on paper or on a canvas, but the fact that most things were create on the walls is impressive.
2. The Gothic era used lots of very detailed architecture. This is amazing, due to the fact that today we seem to have more simple designs to our buildings. When looking at the Gothic architecture, its very detailed and intricate.
3. Greek art had 3 major periods, the Mycenaean age, classical age and Hellenism. I thought it was interesting how their statues designs changed and became more and more intricate and more realistic as the ages progressed.

1. Greek art actually had 4 different eras. Myceaen, archaic, classical, and hellenistic. The focus of the mycenaen era was mainly architecture and sculptures.
2. The roman era had a class conscious population. Domus (high class) and insula (working class). The domus class wore more elaborate and longer clothing than the insula class.
3. The medieval era was not all about dungeons and dragons! It also had a strong presence in the realm of stained glass. It also included many elaborate castles.
4. The gothic era, much unlike it is now, was all about holiness. The "first" gothic building was a place of worship. It was one of the most elaborate cathedrals of its time.
5. The Northern Renaissance era was a more modern art period. It's paintings included nature and very realistic images. No elaborate greek gods, but simple working class citizens.

In Greek art I learned that there were three different ages in this art period. The first age was the Cenaen age was the first age. The Archaic age was the second age. The third age was the Classic age.Roman art was the next presentation that we had and I learned that the architecture was very beautiful. It was so detailed. It was a truly amazing time for art. Another art history period was Medieval art and I learned that it was really just a lot of Romanesque and Gothic styles combined together. Stained glass was a very popular thing that was used. It was so popular. Another art history period that we learned about was the Northern Rennisaunce. I learned that they used very vibrant colors. They were all about being very realistic and detail orriented in their paintings. The final art period that I learned was the mannerism period it was great. They used very rich golden or silver colors. It had a lot of conservative protection. And literature was about civility and virtue.

1. In the Mycenaean age of Greek art most of their architecture had a war theme. This was because of the siege of Troy by Mycenae. They had thick walls for protection of possible invasions.
2. In Roman art many of the influences were from Greek art. The women wore stolas which had colors representing their ages. The men wore togas and were longer and got shorter as they got older.
3. The medieval art period has vivid colors and showed power through size in paintings. Also in paintings they showed little emotion in the faces and the bodies were usually stiff. The architecture was based off of Romanesque and Gothic so they had pointed arches, ribbed vaults, tall towers and symmetrical buildings.
4. In the Northern Renaissance they put vivid colors and details into their paintings. They used naturalistic landscapes and had humanist and spiritual paintings. They believed in Modern Devotion which meant they encouraged individual attitudes.
5. The Mannerism period was a transition art period. In their paintings they had elongated proportions and highly stylized poses. Also they had frescoes on walls, ceilings, false windows and doors.
1. I learned a few interesting facts about Medieval literature. Medieval literature was primarily composed of religious works that were hand written. Books during this time were also very valued and treasured by people. I thought this was interesting because in modern times books are a common thing and aren't nearly as valued as they used to be.
ReplyDelete2. I also learned about the different styles of Roman art. Roman art consisted of 4 different styles which were structural/masonry, Illusionism, ornate, and the fourth style combined things from all of the previous styles. This was cool because usually when people are discussing things about the Romans it only concerns their architecture and battle strategies.
3. The classical Greek period in art history was also interesting to learn about. the Greeks had 3 different eras to their art. I originally only thought that Greek art was all the same style and that it stayed the same and didn't change. I enjoy Greek mythology so I found it nice to learn something new about the Greeks.
4. I also learned that in the Gothic era that stained glass was very important. Stained glass was used to tell stories because most people during that timer period were illiterate so it was one of the only ways they could understand a story that wasn't told orally. Huge stained glass windows were also used to allow a lot of light into all of the buildings that they made.
5. Mannerism also was s subject that intrigued me. In mannerism shapes and figures are distorted. I studied the Northern Renaissance and during that time period they did not use distorted figures and objects. It was intriguing to learn about something that was the opposite of what I learned about.

1. Greek art and philosophy continues to impact the everyday lives of people. For example, the concept of democracy is used by many countries of the world and the many playwrights of the period's theme's are still referenced today.
2. The Roman era was more technologically advanced. Many inventions come from this time. For example, the aqueduct was invented and used gravity to transport water to the cities.
3. The main thing that stood out to me from the Medieval Age was all of the beautiful stained glass. It was a center of the age. The castles were highly detailed and the stained glass was also used in them.
4. In the Gothic Era, much of the focus was on architecture. Incredibly detailed churches and other important buildings could be seen, much like the Medevial Age. These two ages were kind of blended together.
5. The Northern Renaissance was a large move to more realistic paintings and art. Bright and vibrant colors were used and the focus of the painting was usually larger than the rest of the figures in the painting.

1). In roman art there are 4 main styles, Masonary style which seems like its painted with stones. Illusionistic style painted like landscape scenes.Ornamental style paints framed pictures giving the illusion the picture is framed when its only a painted frame. And the 4th style which is the most realistic style and uses characteristics from the other 3 styles.
2).The northern renaissance uses hidden symbolism, to represent different religious or emotional or faithful thing. This is important because it gives you a better perspective on the artist thoughts and emotions.
3). The mannerism period uses very distorted figures and colors, the human anatomy was longer wider. Its important to help charcterize and distinguish, the art from the mannerism period.
4). Rome was named after Romulus and Remus, the two boys that were orphans and raised by wolves. This insipid literature music and art.
5). Gothic cathedrals had flying buttresses to help support the walls were a vault or arch are located. This is important because it was successful architectural design that still is used today, and the many of the buildings from the Gothic period still stand and are in use today.

1. The Greek period was split into 4 eras. The Mycenaean, Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. Each period was significantly different yet somewhat the same. I studied the Classical period where theaters and much of the century's entertainment was introduced. I found it very interesting that they had such huge auditoriums could project such little sound so that it could be heard all over! Nudity in sculptures was also very popular, resembling a noble honest man.
2. The Roman age was interesting to me because its when society began to see different social classes arise. There was the Domos (high class) and the Insula (everyone else) you could tell them apart by their housing. The Domos lived in extravagant and large houses, while the Insula lived in apartment-like homes very similar to the ones we have today. More mathematics and music was also introduced during this time!
3. I thought the medieval period was the most interesting. People focused more on what they looked like, the fashion and what they were wearing. Color in clothing was introduced, very vibrant colors were introduced unlike ever before. People who went to churches were taxed, so the religious groups gained a substantial amount of money. Architecture took a new shape and form with the arches, tall towers, and flying buttresses.
4. In the gothic period frescoes were introduced. They were wall paintings with certain technique used to make them long lasting. Naturalism, mannerism, and ichnography were used in sculptures. Architecture was very similar to the medieval times, with the high arches and flying buttresses. Women started to wear their hair down and wore elegant simple long dresses. There was much expression of human emotion seen in the paintings from this era.
5. The northern renaissance was a very innovative period. There were many inventions that resulted in advancements for the society. The printing press was invented in 1436 and it helped the spread of literature. By the end of the year over 6 million books were printed. The caravel was also invented, it was a type of boat that allowed for a new trade center. There were many castles built, and schools were based upon which religion you were. The art form was very different, often portraying demons and fiends and evil creatures.

1. In the Greek art period, there were 4 distinct ages in the time period: Mycenaean, Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. One of the most famous authors in this time period was Homer who wrote the "Odyssey". The architecture of this time reflected the war-like society in this time period as well.
2. The Roman time period was based mostly around architecture. One of their main and most influential structures in their architecture was arches, and as a result of this discovery, aquaducts were built to help irrigation. I thought it was interesting that the sculptures of this time period were created with ideal expressions on the face in order to keep that person's ghost happy.
3. The Medieval century occured in the 5th century. Main artistic mediums of this time period were sculptures, mosaics, stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, and metal work. Artists showed power of figures in their art by painting a person smaller or larger.
4. The Gothic period had a main focus on architecture, with influences from Rome there are many cathedrals from this time period filled with arches and flying butresses. In the paintings, there was more human expression shown on the faces of the subjects. Another main focus in this time period were stained glass windows as well, because they were able to tell stories through it's art and a lot of people who were illiterate at the time could find an artistic outlet that they could understand.
5. The Northern Renaissance was a time of invention and trade of power as the caravel allowed for more extensive trading posts and the printing press was able to produce written works such as the Bible in various languages so that literature was now more accesible to more people. The art of this period was very humanistic as well as manneristic and had a large Flemish influence. Another significant characteristic of this time period was that there were now Humanistic schools being created outside of Italy so children would no longer have to travel to Italy for their education.

2.)Stained glass was a huge part of Gothic art. Stained glass is most often seen as only a piece of art. However, i learned that stained glass was made to tell a story, as well as allow light into a room. My dad and I saw some really cool stained glass in Koln, Germany.
3.) Roman art and architecture was most influenced by Byzantine art. This often included painting, sculptures, and embroideries. Most of these paintings were done as wall murals and manuscripts.

These paintings and pieces of art are still seen very commonly, because of their historical significance, and the artists who painted them.
5.) Roman art, though it included still life portraits, sculptures, and canvas paintings, one of the most common pieces of art was carvings. Carvings were used to depict Gods, people and more. They were also used commonly throughout Roman architecture.

1) I have learned that Greek art is actually made up of four separate ages being the Mycenaean age, Archaic age, classical age, and Hellenistic age. The Mycenaean age was made up of constant warfare which heavily influenced the architecture. The Greeks also mainly wore togas throughout their whole age.
2) For the Roman age, I learned that their literature was heavily influenced by the Greeks. Also the first love poetry was produced in this period. Another interesting thing I learned was that their sculptures depicted ideal romans. They also incorporated religions and art of those who they conquered into their society.
3) I learned that medieval art heavily incorporated vivid colors and also conveyed power through size. Religion was very popular during this time which is the reason for many cathedrals being built. Another very interesting thing I learned was that sculptures and painting of people had very little emotion.
4) I learned that Gothic art wasn’t widely accepted at first but once King Louis approved of it, the style was found all across Europe. Very complex symbolism was incorporated in gothic art style and human features were very accurate. An interesting thing, was that the gothic age was far more elegant and sophisticated than the roman age.
5) I learned that the Northern Renaissance came right after a plaque and a population boom came during this plaque. Their art was vibrant, detailed, and incorporated realist, humanist, naturalist, and spiritual ideals. Another interesting thing I learned was that the art contained many demons and fiends which helped preachers threaten sinners in their sermons.

1. The most interesting fact I learned was that prostitutes wore togas (Greek Period). This is important to know because I feel a lot of people have misconceptions about togas. They played a role in developing fashion over time and people still wear toga-inspired clothes today.
2. During the Roman era, the Coliseum was a very important part of architecture. It displayed advanced architecture of that time. It allowed for people to come together and explore more artistic aspects of society. Theater grew.
3. The Gothic era had a lot of intricate churches built. So many churches were being built because more and more people were turning to faith and Christianity because of the black plague. The majority of these churches were for Catholics.
4. During the Medieval period, all literature was hand written and hand copied. What they wrote on was lambskin. There was no printing at this point in history, so book making was tedious work. Because of that, people locked up their books!
5. The Northern Renaissance was a time of change. People started to modernize their lives. One example of that is the invention of the printing press, so literature was able to be spread around. Since more things could be printed there were more Bibles available, and many pieces of art from this period are Bible scenes.

1) From 2600 BC to 31 BC, was Greek Art. Of the Greek Art, there were four different ages. These ages were called The Mycenaean Age, the Archaic Age, the Classical Age and the Hellenistic Age. Each had influences on different things such as politics, philosophy and architecture. I thought this was interesting because I never thought of a certain art period having different ages.
2) The Roman Art period was especially interesting to me because of the architectural influence it had. Arches, sculptures and stone were a huge part of this age. Aqueducts were a result of the newly influenced arches. One fact I though was interesting was the introduction of demons on churches to keep people from sinning. It reminded me of the movie Notre Dame.
3) In the 5th century was the Medieval Art period. A reacurring fact of this art period was the creation of larger main characters to have them stand out in art work. The major influences of this art period were sculptures, mosaics, stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, and metal work.
4) Gothic Art was another interesting art period. Much of this period focused on architecture mostly in churches. During this time, detailed art was added to the outside of churches as well as on the walls inside. It was much like the Medieval Age.
5) The Northern Renaissance Era was filled with more modern art. This era was mainly focused on nature and realistic printings. An interesting aspect of this period was that there was a shift from upper class individuals to lower/middle class individuals as the center pieces.

1. The Medieval art period was one that was largely centered around Christianity. Medieval literature, art, and music were all influenced by religious ideals. I found it interesting how this major period was divided into smaller eras, like Early Christian Art, Byzantine Art, Pre-Romanesque, Romanesque, and Late Antique Art.
2. The Romanesque Era was based on the Roman and Byzantine periods. Wall murals, manuscripts, embroidery and stained glass were all just a few of the characteristics of this period. I thought it was cool how statues were commonly embedded into buildings.
3. The Gothic Era was especially known for its architecture. This period was defined by tall buildings, big arches, more modern materials, and stained glass. Stained glass was used so much in churches because it let light into the buildings, making it seem more holy, as well as to tell religious stories with the glass. Also, art in general in this period was very interesting, with realistic, detailed, life-like statues and the use of perspective and the 3rd dimension in paintings.
4. The Classical Greek Era was classified by three major eras: the Cycladic Era, the Archaic Era, and the Hellenistic Era. The Greek era often used art to depict Greek gods and mythology. This period was also known for its advances in philosophy, by philosophers we still study and learn from today, such as Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates.
5. The Roman Art period was known for the architecture, paintings, and sculptures of the time period. Roman architecture was largely influenced by the Greek architecture, such as temples and aqueducts. Art during the time was mainly paintings of animals, still life and everyday life. Roman sculptures were also based off of that of the Classical Greek Era.

1. In the Medieval times the literature was heavily based on religion. I also learned that the paper was made from calf and lamb skin. I found that interesting because I never knew skin could ever be used as paper.
2. In the Romanesque era, they had their statues imbedded into the buildings. I found this very interesting because I have now realized I have seen many buildings with statues imbedded in them. I love how they made their statues different than the other time eras.
3. I learned that Classical Greek era had three different arch styles. The Doric style was simple. The Ionic was thinner and elegant. The Corinthian had deep detail.
4. The Italian Renaissance had a lot to do with music. They had a variety of styles. Polyphonic was a music style that consisted of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody. Secular was a non religious type of music. Motets were short pieces of sacred music. And also that operas originated in Italy, which I had not known before.
5. Roman art had a different method of creating domes. The domes were made out of concrete. This was because it was strong and cheap. They then covered it in marble to give it a finished look.

ReplyDelete1. The Roman art period was known for sculptures, architecture and art. Paintings were of everyday, lifelike things. Most things painted were people or animals. Roman art was influenced by Greece.
2. During the Northern Renaissance, people changed. Printing presses were created. Bibles were able to be mass produced. People started to change the way they dressed and acted.
3. The Gothic period had a lot of stained glass. The colors were usually blue and red because they were bold. The windows were usually religious and told a story.
4. Mannerism was unlike any other period. They mostly focused on paintings. The paintings depicted the people as longer and wider then normal.
5.The Medievil time period was not as scary as it sounds. It contained a lot of stain glass and architecture. Gargoyles were a major trade mark.

So far these presentations have proved to be quite interesting. 1) One thing that intrigued me that was said by the Mannerism group was that the sculpture of David by Michael Angelo had hands that were larger proportioned to his body. I never had thought about sculptures needing different proportions depending on where they are displayed. Apparently the sculpture of David was on a building so from looking from the street his hands would appear proportionate to his body but now he is displayed in a museum and his hands look huge. 2) I also found the architecture of the gothic are to be very interesting. I knew before that many buildings had pointed arches but I didn’t know that they had ribbed vaults to allow for higher ceilings and more windows. I also did not know that wall paintings were called frescoes. 3) I was also intrigued by the types of art that came out of the medieval era. I thought it was interesting that most all of the art featured people fully clothed. It seems like in many in the era’s artists liked to paint their subjects nude. 4) I found it interesting that in the Roman era that on sculptures a good image of a face would make the ghosts happy. This sparked something in me right away because in my time period (Northern Renaissance) they were straying away from making people look so perfect. They were more interested in making people look realistic whereas it seems like they did the opposite in the Roman times. 5) Lastly, I found the evolution of the Greek Art era very interesting. I did not know before that Greek art was split into the Mycenaean Age, Archaic Age, Classical Age, and the Hellenistic Age. It’s interesting that by the time of the final age there was much more national pride and architectural advances.

1. During the Classical Greek era, I learned that there where a lot of mini era's during it. One of them was the Cycladic era. Another era was the Archeic era. The statue of Zeus which is one of the seven wonders of the of the ancient world was during this time.
2. During the Gothic era, I thought it was interesting how it was mainly statues. The statues where different and each meant something new. It would be interesting to try to build a statue like how they did back then because that would take a lot of work.
3. During the Medieval Art, I learned that it was mostly composed of religious writings for medieval literature. The work was hand-copied which is impressive. It was during the second century to the beginning of the third century.
4. The Italian Renaissance had lot of medieval roots. Florence, Italy was at the heart of it which seem like it would fit well because there is a lot of class and culture their. Also, operas originated in Italy which is a cool fact that I learned.
5. During the Northern Renaissance, they started print making which was new at the time. Oil paintings where done the most. Then the theatre was influenced by protestertism.
1. Medieval art spanned over 1000 years. In their art they used vivid colors to make it stand out. People who are bigger are people with more power
ReplyDelete2. Gothic period was the most essential art form. It was mysterious and very spiritual. A popular gothic art was stain glass
3. Paintings were on walls and ceilings. Instead of canvases. Sadly they were painted over or destroyed
5. Northern Renaissance-I like the naturalistic painting that this time period. Also the landscapes were very nice. I liked the vibrant colors they used for their paintings.

1. When I was listening to the gothic period I found the stained glass art work interesting. A lot of the colors were bold like blues and reds. This was the first time I really heard of glass working as a forum of art where as today its huge with things like the Chihuly glass in seattle.
2. Mannersim was for the most part all paintings but it could be seen in music.
It was pictures typically of everyday life. The spacial reasoning was a bit different and it caused some pictures to have abnormal looking people in them.
3. The medieval period had artwork that focused on religion, specifically Christianity. It influenced everything from music to paintings and architecture.
Animal skin was used as paper.
4. Romanesque period took a lot of the styles from roman artwork and applied them. In architecture they used plenty of arches and vaults just like the romans did.
5. The northern renaissance was a period I thought was very important. The printing press was developed which allowed for paintings to be reprinted although these were still seen as "original". This also caused easier access to the bible which impacted art with religious themes.

1)In roman art there are 4 main styles, Masonary, which seems like its painted with stones. Illusionistic style was painted like landscape scenes.Ornamental style had painted framed pictures giving the illusion the picture is framed when its only a painted frame. And the 4th style which had used characteristics of the first three combined which i found interesting.
2)Medieval art had different types of art. To show it they had sculptures, architecture, paintings. There was early Christian art. And then it split into two different time periods. There was Byzantine art that focused on a needs of a church.
3)During the Gothic Period I learned about their stained glass, which i found quite interesting. They had massive stained glass windows that covered most of the walls. The added light was supposed to give the rooms a more holy feel. Most people were illiterate, so they learned through the pictures instead of words when it came to the stained glass and other art.
4)Operas emerged during the Italian Renaissance which was interesting to learn. This was a huge event in art history because operas combined so many art forms from so many eras. Architecture, painting, singing, acting, and instruments were all included in these productions.
5) During the Classical Greek era, there was an early era that was geometrical, a middle that was naturalistic and a late era that was real. This era had marble figures and females were geometric. The archaic era was a realistic depiction of humans. They were made of marble, limestone and bronze. Sculptures were for decorating temples.

1. In the Greek art period it is separated into 4 ages, the mycenaen, archaic, classical and hellenistic. In the Hellenistic age theaters were introduced while in the Archaic age had sculptures and paintings made using geometric shapes.
2. In the Roman art period I learned that many of the influences in literature we see during this period are from the greek era. Roman art includes architecture, paintings, sculptures, and mosaic work.
3. In the Medieval art I learned that it covers over 1,000 years of art in Europe and even middle east and north Africa. paintings and sculptures are influenced by Jesus Christ. Medieval art grew out of the artistic heritage of the roman empire.
4. The Mannerism art period came out after the high renaissance. In its art their are poses that are dramatic such as the Madonna with a long neck.
5. In the Gothic era the black plague was ongoing. Many people needed something to get them through the tough times so they turned to Jesus for guidance. The catholic church was highly popular. Many paintings were of either god or jesus.

1. i learned that medieval era of art incorporated so many different styles of art. when i here medieval i just think jousting and plague, and if i do think of art it is simple stained glass in churches. i never really considered byzantine art a part of medieval art.
2. i learned there were three different sub-era's of Greek art. archaic, cycladicera and early era. i used to just consider it all one era.
3.i learned that there was a difference between the Italian Renaissance and other Renaissances. i guess it kind of makes since though, it would be impossible for the same ideas to spread over all of europe. i would have also imagined Venice to be more artistic than florence
4. i learned that northern europe art and gothic art were very similar and could be easily confused. both had the same style of architecture. the most common medium of the time was also oil on panel.
5. and finally i learned that mannerism doesn't really have a set of guide lines. it is really just art that goes directly for your emotions.

So far I really enjoyed these presentations in my period. Everyone is doing an amazing job on their presentation and I love all the pictures and history from each era!
1. Greek Era - During the Greek Era there were four different Eras during Ancient Greece. It started out with the Archaic period, then Classical Age, after that there was Hellenistic Age and it finally ended with Roman Greece Age. During this age the Architecture was reflected the war-life society. Strong gates such as the Lion Gate and sturdy walls surrounded the towns and cities for defense. Most of the sculptures in this era was depicted women, and almost all the sculptures and paintings showed nudity (It was a large part of this age) which back then was normal and respectful to the society, unlike in the later ages. During the Greece Age was also the introduction to bronze which played a huge part in the upcoming years. They started to use bronze on statues and painting frames.
2. Roman Age - Today we see arches and unusual/weird architecture everywhere, well, without the Romans great knowledge our world would look really squarry. They developed empirical methods for designing arches which still stands today! Incredible! I also learned that Togas were worn by men, but I tough women wore Togas too! False, they were actually wearing a similar clothing as a Toga but instead it was called Stulas! This information would have been great before Homecoming... Also, music (my favorite!) was becoming more popular (yay!) and a lot of mathematicians worked with music first and then somehow math developed into an alien language and numbers. You're welcome Mathematicians, without music there wouldn't be nerds/geeks like myself!
3. Medieval Age!!!! - Blonde Knight on a white horse, swords, crowns, huge castles and fancy armors, it was the best age to be alive! Well... only if you were a lord or a king or a queen, otherwise it would have sucked.. During this age the main NEW styles of media used were mosaics, stained glass, manuscripts and beautiful book covers! More vivid colors were introduced and it has been used many times on the paintings and especially on stained glass (Mostly blue and red). Also, the bodies and facial expression on the sculptures and paintings were emotionless, they showed no feelings or expressions. Jewels, precious metals (like gold and silver) and Ivory carving were also introduced and became rally popular in no time, especially for the queens! bling-bling...

4. Gothic Age - There were three phases of the Gothic Era. The first phase was the Early Gothic period which was around the 10th century. Then it was the Middle Gothic Era which was around 1250-1400, and finally as you guessed, the Late Gothic Era which was around 1400-1500. Painting with oil were introduced and paintings were based upon idealized naturalism and mannerism. As of architect wise they liked point things.. Pointy roofs, pointy churches, pointy rakes against the "witches"... Their art and paintings became more realistic and dark. Sculptures from this age were very dark and serious and showed no emotions. I bet it was hard to make these folks smile, but they have a few reason to be sad, since the Black Plaque wiped almost all Europe out. Also, they were really against nudity and almost no art showed any skin other than their hands and faces.
5. Northern Renaissance! - Finally we are entering the Renaissance age! Both the Northern and Italian Renaissance is my favorite time period, even though i said the same thing for Medieval age, and I like the Italian Renaissance a bit more than the Northern... It started to bloom in late 15th to early 16th century (1450-1525 to be exact). It was a different age than the previous ones. They brought back the Ancient Greece styles and traditions and it also maintained a humanists tradition. Nudity were becoming more popular once again and the art of the body were became more and more realistic on the sculptures and the paintings. Also, the painting press was invented in 1436 by Johannas Gutenburg. Thanks to him we are able to print thousand page math and history books and also, we have to buy expensive ink refills for our printers every month. I guess its really not that bad... This Era believed Geometry to be the foundation of all paintings and finally, engravings into metal became popular.
1. I learned that Greek art is classified into four different ages: Mycenaen, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic.
ReplyDelete2. I learned that the art in the Mannerism era was distorted and abstract. This was very different from classical art, which was very realistic.
3. During the Gothic Period, I learned that stained glass was a very common piece of artwork. These pieces of artwork were typically found in churches.
4. The Italian Renaissance was a time of change. People were growing towards modern life, showing more individualism
5. The Roman era was more technologically advanced and many inventions come from this time.

1. The Gothic period, much like the medieval age focused on architecture, stained glasses, and art pieces often found in churches. Churches were decorated on the outside and inside. Many of the art in this time period had a "dark" theme.
2. In Medieval times literature was largely based on religion. Religion was common in all time periods but was a major part of the medieval era unlike any other.
3.The Northern Renaissance Era contained many pieces of modern art. This era was mainly focused on nature and realistic artwork. One unique fact about this era was the lower and middle class was the main focus instead the usual upper class being most important.
4.The mannerism period had a lot of abstract styled. Also the human body was depicted differently and had a unique anatomy. Shoulders were wider, people were longer etc.
5. Medieval times fashion was mostly wool burlap, with no synthetic materials. This was unusual because the people of this era were very civilized yet still whore simplistic clothing.

1. I learned from the Roman art period that was fashion was very similar to the Greek age. The articles of clothing were those of togas and stolas, which are similar to the chitons that the Greek wore. The fashion sense was variably different for each age group and changed in the classes of society.
2. The Gothic Period was interesting because the name deceives the theme of the era. Today when I hear Gothic, I think very dark and sad, but this period was still beautiful. The sculptures and art in this time reflected naturalism and some of the most detailed artwork ever made.
3. Mannerism art had elongated proportions because much of their art was view from below, which made the sculptures look more accurate. Using knowledge to create art to make sure it's viewed in the best way possible was very interesting to learn about. They were usually life size or larger and consisted of bizarre beauty.
4. The Northern Renaissance sparked new ideas, and used many bright colors in all the artwork. They used animals in their art, and also depicted many angels and demons. Modern devotion was a term from this period that encouraged an individual attitude towards daily life and religion.
5. Romanesque art was entertaining to learn about because it was a part of Medieval art, which was previously presented on. The housing was multi-stories but usually only had one room per floor, which was puzzling to me. Along with housing, the churches had very high windows and I thought it was interesting that churches had pointed tops to reach closer to the heavens.
